They struggled, Benny landing a few punches before he could wrench the trigger out of his hand. Then he kicked him in the stomach.

Benny rolled off him and before he could move, Benny was standing over him and he had a gun aimed at his head.

Time stood still for a second and then the gun went off, the sound making him blink. He heard a yell. A heart-wrenching one he knew could only have come from Zero.

He didn’t feel a damn thing which was why he thought he was dead until another gunshot sounded and Benny fell backward.

He patted down himself and didn’t find any holes or blood.

He gasped in a breath and dropped his head back. He was okay. He was in one piece.

Black boots entered his vision.

He looked up. King was standing over him, hand outstretched.

He let King pull him to his feet and handed him the trigger, not wanting to hold that for one second longer.

“Thank you.”

King nodded and before he could say anything, someone slammed into Jack’s side. He stumbled but Zero’s arms around him kept him from falling on his ass. He buried his face against Zero’s neck and held on tight, hating the way Zero trembled.

“Don’t you fucking dare do that again,” Zero growled.

He squeezed his eyes closed and didn’t say anything because that was a promise he couldn’t make. He would always protect Zero no matter the cost.

Chapter Seventeen

Jack

HE AND Zero had left the others to clean up with Helena in tow. Once there was no evidence of their involvement, King would call in the bomb. If there even was one. They weren’t taking any chances, though.

He was in the backseat with Helena half in his lap. She wasn’t doing great, but she was better off than he’d expected. It was hard to believe she’d stepped in front of Zero for his sake. Not because she wasn’t brave enough, but because she didn’t know Zero.

He looked up and found Zero watching him in the rearview. Their eyes met for a second and he couldn’t keep a smile from forming on his lips. The compassion he saw in those eyes was astounding.

“He loves you,” Helena mumbled.

“Huh?”

He glanced down at her and brushed some of her hair out of her face.

She caught his hand and gave it a weak squeeze, then said, “He told me.”

“He told you?”

“He did. Said he was the guy in love with you.”

He glanced up at Zero again and warmth spread through his chest.

“I messed up,” Helena croaked out.

He blew out a breath and looked down at her.

“Yeah, you did. What the hell were you thinking?”

Tears ran down Helena’s cheeks as she looked up at him with such anguish in her eyes.

“I went to see you. In prison.”
