“I appreciate you praising my stamina,” Jet said with a wink at Zero.

“Pretty sure it ain’t your stamina,” Zero said under his breath, though loud enough for them all to hear.

Walker threw his head back with a booming laugh while Jet crossed his arms and pouted at him.

He watched them for a moment, feeling both jealous and relieved at seeing them happy. Relieved because there hadn’t been any cheating. Jealous because he was supposed to be happy, too. Happy because he was out. Free. Happy because he finally had his life and his family back.

Turned out, he had neither.

Zero

Having Jack stay with him was… a recipe for disaster. For both of them. Well, mostly him. He’d either end up with a concussion or bending over the nearest surface for the guy but if he was truly honest with himself, he knew a concussion wouldn’t stop him from bending over.

“So,” Walker said, eyes twinkling. “How are you looking forward to becoming an uncle?”

Jack tensed up like a fucking livewire. Walker and Jet seemed too excited to even notice. But he saw. He saw the pain flash through the man’s eyes. He saw the light tremble in his hand before he clenched it into a fist and put it down on his thigh to hide it.

“I…” Jack hesitated. His gaze was anywhere but on Walker and Zero could feel his discomfort from across the table.

Zero pushed back his chair before he even realized he was doing it.

“Uh. I think I’mma head home, guys. Long day tomorrow and all.” He turned his gaze on Jack. “You wanna come with?”

“Yep,” Jack said.

He hugged Jet, then headed toward the front door with Jack right behind him. Walker followed, too.

“Thanks for dinner,” Jack mumbled before disappearing out the door.

Zero looked back at Walker who gave him a look he was too afraid to decipher.

“Zero…”

“I’ll see you tomorrow,” he hurried to say and took off after Jack.

Jack’s bike was parked next to his and Jack was waiting for him in front of them.

“You want the address or—”

“I’ll just follow you,” Jack said.

Zero gave him a nod, then pulled on his helmet and got on his bike.

It was only a five-minute drive which he usually loved but right then he wished it was longer. Way longer. He could’ve used a few hours to prepare himself for the hurricane that was Jack.

He turned into the parking lot in front of his apartment complex. It was a very nice place which was also why he struggled to pay the rent without a roommate.

He parked and dismounted, then waited for Jack to do the same. Jack pulled off his helmet and looked around. He whistled but didn’t say a word, just looked at Zero with raised brows.

He bit his tongue and decided to ignore the judgmental look in Jack’s eyes. Jack didn’t know him. Jack also just had his world turned upside down and not just because he’d been released from prison. Something was clearly going on between him and his brother and whatever it was, Ash and the baby seemed to be involved.

He released a silent breath before leading the way inside and up the stairs. His apartment was only on the second floor, so he never bothered using the elevator.

“It’s just a bed and a dresser but it’s clean and the sheets are new. Pillow, too,” he said as he turned the key to unlock the front door.

He stepped inside and held the door open for Jack, then closed it behind them.

“Thanks for letting me stay here.”
