“Ghost, remember that you’re not alone in this,” Maggie reminded me gently. “You have people who care about you and want to help. Don’t be afraid to lean on them.”

“Thanks, Maggie,” I said, already feeling better after talking to her.

She was upbeat and friendly as she ended our conversation. “Call me if you need anything else, or if you just want to talk, okay? Take care, Ghost.”

“Will do,” I promised, ending the call and letting out a heavy breath. The road ahead was going to be far from easy, but with Maggie’s guidance and the support of my friends, maybe I could find a way through this tangled mess. And, for the first time, I felt like I needed to unburden myself.

I knew I had to confront Remi about what she knew and possibly give her a quote, but the thought of baring my soul to her was terrifying. Still, deep down, I knew it was necessary. My secrets couldn’t remain hidden forever, and dealing with them head-on was the only way to regain control over my life.

Stepping out of the room, I saw Knox and Ryder lounging on the couch, watching TV. I grabbed a drink from the refrigerator, lost in thought.

Suddenly, the tour bus door swung open with a loud creak. Trudy burst in, her eyes sparkling with excitement, and a grin stretched across her face.

“Guys!” she exclaimed, looking around at us. “You won’t believe who just confirmed they’re coming to our Boston show!”

“Who?” I asked, my curiosity piqued despite the emotional whirlwind I was dealing with.

“Greyson Durant!” Trudy nearly shrieked, bouncing on her toes. “Can you believe it? Greyson freaking Durant is going to be at our concert!”

A wave of conflicting emotions washed over me, leaving me feeling more disoriented than ever. Of all people, it had to be him? Fuck.

“Wow, that’s ... great,” I managed, forcing a smile onto my face even though my stomach twisted into knots. “Boston’s gonna be quite the show, then.”

Trudy was grinning like a kid on Christmas morning. “This is going to be epic! I can’t believe I get to meet him.”

As I watched her celebrate, I couldn’t help but feel a strange sense of dread settling in the pit of my stomach. The thought of Greyson being there — seeing me perform, watching me from the shadows — made my heart race and my palms sweat. There was something about him that unnerved me. I didn’t want him around me, especially now when I was dealing with so much shit from my past.

It made no sense. I had barely spoken two words to the man since I’d met him years ago, and yet his presence loomed large over me. Why did he have such an effect on me? Was it just jealousy of his fame? I really didn’t think so. It was something deeper, more primal.

“You okay, Ghost?” Knox asked, snapping me out of my introspection.

“Yeah,” I lied, rubbing the back of my neck. “Just ... wondering why he’s coming, I guess.”

He shrugged, clapping me on the shoulder. “Maybe he just wants to see a show? He’s a cool bloke. We’ll have to show him how rock stars party when he’s here.”

“Totally,” I agreed, nodding my head as if I was on board with the excitement. But inside, I knew that Greyson’s arrival would only complicate an already tangled web of emotions, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was standing on the edge of something monumental, maybe even something catastrophic.

But for better or worse, there was no turning back now. The cards had been dealt, and it was time to face whatever hand fate had in store for me.

Chapter 14

Remi

I stepped into the hotel’s dining area, the smell of freshly brewed coffee and sizzling bacon filling the air, as I joined the band members and their families for breakfast. My heart raced with excitement, but my stomach twisted in knots of apprehension as I became more involved in their lives. I was starting to think of them more as friends than as the subjects of my reporting. It was hard to stay neutral when the logistics of the tour pushed us all so close together.

My first taste of life on the road — living on the cramped tour bus with Trudy being the only other female on board, moving from city to city, living out of suitcases, and nonstop partying. It was exhilarating, but it was starting to feel like a grind.

Kaylie scooted over to make room for me at the table. “Morning, Remi!” Kaylie greeted me warmly, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.

“Morning,” I replied, taking a seat next to her. Sid sat on her other side, his arm casually draped around her shoulders.

“Remi, you have to hear this,” Kaylie said, leaning in closer. She sipped her coffee before continuing, “Sid got locked out of our hotel room this morning wearing nothing but a towel! I couldn’t hear him banging on the door because I was in the shower. A maid had to let him in.” Her laughter filled the air, drawing smiles from everyone around us.

“Hey, it wasn’t my fault!” Sid retorted as he stabbed a piece of bacon with his fork. “The door slammed shut when I went to grab the newspaper.”

Kaylie launched into stories about her life with Sid, sharing their experiences on the road and giving me a glimpse into the challenges and joys of being part of a rock band’s family. “When we first started dating,” she began, smiling sweetly as she reminisced, “Sid would call me every night from a different city. It was sweet but also kind of crazy trying to keep up with his schedule.”

“Tell me about it,” I said, nodding in agreement. “But it must be exciting too, right?”
