“It’s you,” she said. “They need you. They need you to have survived. And you did. That’s what you did for them. That’s what you did for the country. You don’t have to be perfect. No one would expect that.”

“It would be nice if I wasn’t a danger to others.”

“You didn’t hurt me. Did you?”

“You know what I want to do to you?” he said, his voice a low growl. “I want to strip you naked and have you on that bed.”

Heat rose up inside of her, and her heartbeat sped up. She could see it. That gruff declaration. His body over hers as he...

She swallowed hard. “That’s the adrenaline.”

“It isn’t.”

“You need to go to sleep, Riyaz.”

“It will not be here.”

“You don’t need to punish yourself for perceived transgression...”

“You don’t know what I need. If you did, then this wouldn’t have happened.”

And then he turned and stormed out of the room, leaving her standing there surrounded by the shattered remains of all of the furniture. She was going to have to give Cairo an update.

And if she left out the fact that Riyaz made her pulse race, the fact that his dark, sensual promise did not scare her, but rather ignited in her a need that she could scarcely explain...

That was understandable.

The dungeon was dark. And it was familiar. And after all of that it was... The right place for him to be.

His pulse was still racing. His mind filled with images of what he’d seen.

His mother.

Always his mother.

Fear and blood and death.

He growled, and he picked up the stone bench, lifting it, and then, he did something he had not done before. He threw it. And it cracked into pieces. The sound of it deafening. Good. He wanted to destroy everything. And that was the worst of it. Coming back to the present moment hadn’t stopped that. What he wasn’t certain was how he had prevented himself from...

All he had wanted to do was to rip the clothes away from her body and satisfy himself. As if the only way that he could possibly be free of the beast growling through his body was to claim her. Take her. Slake his lust on her.

No.

He lay down in the corner of the dungeon. And he welcomed the bite of the rocks against his skin.

He deserved to be punished for just that thought alone.

And he knew that it didn’t matter what she had said. But the door was open.

A part of him would always be locked in here.

CHAPTER FIVE

“NO.THEREHASN’Treally been more progress. I wish that I could say there was. I wish... I’m sorry. But I’m still not entirely sure what he thinks he’s going to do with Ariel. He doesn’t seem to know.”

“I’m keeping her. Until you do know.”

She thought of the way that Riyaz had talked about Ariel, and Cairo’s relationship with her. “She’s your friend. Isn’t she?”
