“Yes.” My pulse beats angrily but I fight it.

“Did Damian Prescott kill Ash Davis?”

“No.” I’m more confident this time.

“Did you lie to the police when you told them Damian Prescott killed Ash Davis?”

“Yes.”

“Are you lying right now?”

“No.”

He presses a few keystrokes and closes the laptop. “Okay, we’re done.” He unhooks me from the wires.

“Thank you for coming in,” the detective says, and I nod, a tight smile on my face, and walk out the door. I never want to do that again.

“Did everything go well?” Ms. Silverman asks, rising as I approach. I swallow away the nerves.

“Yes, nothing out of the ordinary. You prepared me well. Thank you.”

She nods. “Good. I will be in touch once the results are given to me. Please call should you have any questions in the meantime. I’m available anytime.”

“I will. Thank you.” She walks out ahead of us, toward the elevators as we head for the subway. Parking here is a nightmare so we decided not to drive.

“Do you want me to come over and stay the night again?” Lexi asks as we descend the steps to the station. “We can eat ice cream right out of the tub and binge on episodes of Friends all night.”

“That sounds amazing. Thanks, Lex. For everything. I’m really grateful I have you, you know that?”

“Yeah, I know. I’m pretty damn awesome.” We loop our arms together, waiting for the train to arrive. I’m glad I don’t have to be alone this weekend.

We’re on our fourth episode of Friends, our bellies still full from devouring way too much Thai food and chocolate ice cream, laughing at the show as though we haven't already seen it twenty times before. But we’re both so obsessed with it, we could see it another twenty times. “Damian is your lobster isn’t he?” she asks, referencing what one of the characters said about lobsters mating for life.

“Yeah, he kind of is.” Except I can’t be with my lobster because he’s stuck in shark infested waters unable to get to me. My bottom lip quivers and I bite the inside of it to stop the sounds that attempt to escape from my mouth. My eyes gloss over and I know the tears are about to break. And when they finally burst out like a waterfall, I cover my face hoping to silence them, but they refuse to be restrained.

“Oh Lilah, I’m sorry. I was trying to be cute, but I screwed up.” She hugs me as I cry. The last few days have been so mentally exhausting; they’re finally catching up to me.

“It’s not your fault,” I sniffle, looking up at her. “I’m just overwhelmed by everything and— and I just miss him so much, Lex. I need this to be over.”

“I know you do. I hate this. You’ve been through hell and it’s all fucked up. None of this is right. I’m so sorry.”

I wipe my face on his blanket wrapped around us. Just then my cell phone pings with a text and I wonder who it could be as I pick it up off the coffee table.

Jax: Hey, we just wanted to check in and make sure everything went okay today.

Lilah: Thanks guys. It went fine. They asked everything I discussed with my attorney. Thank you for hiring her for me. There was no way I could ever afford one.

Gabe: No worries at all.

Jax: What he means is Damian would’ve killed us from jail if we didn’t. So yeah, you’re welcome, babe.

I giggle.

“Who’s that?” Lexi squints in question.

“Gabe and Jax, just checking in.”
