“It is the responsibility of the surrogate to submit to the necessary procedures to accomplish a pregnancy,” the woman said brightly. “As a side note, according to our exit polls, 95% of participants find the procedure to be highly to extremely enjoyable.”

She willed herself not to blush for the third time and failed. The temptation to glance over at Jubal to see if he had noticed was great. But she resisted.

“Upon successful conception, the surrogate will protect herself and the developing fetus by any means necessary to ensure a healthy birth,” the woman was saying. “We will do all we can to ensure that the surrogate’s experience is a pleasant one, however, the surrogate understands that her experience here is unique to the program. At the end of the gestational period, she will return to her home planet and there will be no further contact with the father or the offspring.”

At least that should reassure his mate back home.

Though the idea of never having contact with her offspring again was desperately sad.

Don’t think about it, she told herself sternly. You already made your decision. Just relax and try your best.

Beside her, Jubal was tapping his foot again.

“Do you need to tinkle?” she asked him on autopilot, pointing to the restroom sign she had noted when she came in.

He stopped tapping instantly, and turned to her.

The reality of what she had just said hit her and she was paralyzed with horror.

They hadn’t taught her this in college, but half of being a really good kindergarten teacher was anticipating bathroom accidents before they happened. Asking a student who was frantically tapping their hands or feet to listen to their body for bathroom cues was second nature to her.

But in this situation, her words could not have been more inappropriate.

Would he storm out and demand his money back? Or ask Oberon for a new match?

Jubal’s handsome face broke into an even more handsome grin, and he laughed a deep, sexy, rumbly laugh that tickled her from the inside out.

“You’re all right, Chloe,” he said, nodding up and down, like she had just passed some sort of test.

That’s fine, she thought to herself. I’m good at tests.

JUBAL

Jubal chuckled to himself.

He had thought Chloe seemed embarrassed and uptight at first. But that was probably only because she was starstruck at the sight of him.

Jubal had made his peace with the idea that the surrogate would be starstruck. When you were as famous as he was, it was pretty much unavoidable.

What was not unavoidable was the idea that she had rallied, and immediately begun razzing him with smart ass remarks.

Do you need to tinkle?

Even Charlie would have cackled at that.

“Does either of you have any questions?” Dr. Oppyx was asking.

Chloe shook her head, her lips buttoned up tight.

She was probably trying not to laugh.

“Nope,” Jubal said.

“Excellent,” Dr. Oppyx said, smiling. “I guess you’ve both done your homework. In that case, it’s time to head to your first activity. You can step outside, and Oberon will explain everything.”

She gestured to the glowing EXIT sign at the back of the bar.
