I pull her tight to me as Jagger cups her head.

“What the fuck?” he murmurs, but James just laughs.

“I think she just figured things out.”

“Baby?”

She lifts her head, her watery eyes losing the ever-present wariness she’s had the last few weeks. “I’m sorry.”

“You have nothing to be sorry for.”

She turns so she can see Jagger, too, touching his chin with her fingertips. “I do. I’m sorry I ran. I’m sorry I made you work so hard for it. I don’t know what I’m doing.”

“You’re protecting yourself just like you’ve always done. But that’s our job now, okay?” Jagger kisses her fingertips before focusing back on James.

“What do you two have cooked up?”

I kiss the tip of Astrid’s nose as we both turn to look at James, whose sole focus is Astrid.

“I didn’t know what I expected when I came here, but this is exactly what I wished for. I’ve been worried about you for so long. I couldn’t have picked better for you if I’d created them myself.”

“You’re not bothered that she’s with the two of us?”

James frowns. “Astrid’s special. She was always going to need something special in return.”

Yeah, I can definitely see why Astrid likes him.

“I asked James to work with me,” Astrid blurts out.

“Doing video games?” Jagger asks, surprised. He’s not the only one. James doesn’t look like much of a gamer.

“No. At the moment, he’s a PI that specializes in cold cases. But I need someone, or a team of someones, to help me with my visions.” She bites her lip, still wary about talking about them with us.

“How?”

She explains about the woman on the bus and the trucker in the diner and how she wants to figure out a way to communicate what she sees to the probable victims in a way that they’ll believe.

“I know it sounds stupid, and maybe it won’t work at all. It’s never going to be easy explaining to someone that they are in danger and how I know that, but I want to try. I have to try.” She takes a deep breath when she’s done.

I nod my head. “I know, princess. And I think it’s a good idea. I can’t imagine having to go through what you do or how helpless it all must feel. I’m not sure how we can help, but anything you need from me and Jagger, just ask. Hell, I’m sure any of the Apex guys will help.”

“Really?”

“Really, Astrid.”

She blows out a relieved breath just as the buzzer for the gate goes off. She frowns at me.

“You’re not expecting anyone else?”

She shakes her head, and Jagger pulls his gun and heads to the door. Astrid gets to her feet, but before she can move, I’m standing in front of her, and James walks over to stand beside me so that she’s completely covered.

“Oh, fuck,” Jagger curses.

“What? Who is it?” I snap as he opens the door, and a familiar face appears.

“What, family can’t visit now?” Oz complains, and I'm stunnedbecause it's not just Oz at Astrid's door. No, it's the whole Apex family.
