“You know this will backfire. You’ll have a dozen club girls thinking they can prospect.”

“Give me some credit, Viper. I know what I’m doing.”

“You have an MC princess as a prospect. Excuse me for being skeptical.”

“All due respect, Viper, I don’t tell you how to run your club. So don’t tell me how to run mine.”

“How’d you know she was a princess?” I ask Zero, knowing Viper won’t answer.

Zero shrugs.

Scope huffs out a dry laugh. “You think Jinx is an issue because she’s a princess. It’s a grown man gossiping like a teenager, even though I made it explicitly clear that everything I said in church was supposed to stay there.”

“I’m not exactly gonna spread that news around.”

“Yeah, but whoever told you clearly doesn’t have the same issue, even though they know they are potentially putting a target on Jinx’s back.” Scope goes on to explain the reason for the secrecy.

I watch Zero. His eyes drift across the room to where I know Boomer is standing. I should have fucking known. I squeeze my hands into fists and feel a nerve tick in my jaw.

“Knuckles told us,” Viper finally admits. “Boomer told him in confidence. It’s his dad, after all, but Knuckles thought we should know. You know what he’s like—old school all the way.”

“The old-school excuse is wearing a little thin. At some point, we’ll have to accept he’s just a dick. And the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

“Knuckles has been here through three presidents. He’s one of the oldest, but he was never considered for the top spot. I think it’s made him bitter. He loves this club and wears his patch with pride, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a certain amount of envy involved. I think that’s why he insisted that Boomer go with you. He feared history would repeat itself. He’s too old now to be a president, but that doesn’t mean he won’t push for Boomer to lead. That way, he can live vicariously through his son.”

“Boomer would make a shitty president. He’s too much like his old man. There was a reason Knuckles was always skipped over.”

“We all know that, but Knuckles doesn’t give a fuck.”

Zero leans forward, his elbows resting on the table. “Boomer will never vote for your prospect. You know that. Why put her through all this?”

“Protection. If I thought I could make her prospect for two years, I would so she had the patch at her back, declaring her ours.”

“I mean, you could, but that would surely be worse for her in the long run.”

“She agreed to six months. Anything more, and I think Splinter, Knight, and Eightball would lose their collective minds. They can’t claim her as an old lady while she prospects.”

“But after six months, you can swap out the prospect patch for a property one, and she’ll still have full club protection.”

As much as I like the idea of Jinx as our old lady, it doesn’t sit right with me that they see it as a solution to the problem at hand. Jinx isn’t the problem. Boomer is. I keep my mouth shut, not sure I can bite my tongue.

“I hope she can win everyone over. I like her, and she’s shown more promise in a few weeks as a prospect than most that walk through the door,” Shredder states.

“We’ll see. So, you, Knight, and Eightball decided to share her? I’ll admit, I didn’t see that one coming. Looks like Scope, Wizz, and Kaz are rubbing off on you.”

“I figured if Scope, of all people, can keep his jealousy in check, then we could. So far, it’s working out fine. I’m sure there’ll be problems, but Jinx is worth it.”

“I felt the same way about Megan.”

“You wanted Megan to piss off the Kings of Carnage.” Scope rolls his eyes.

“That too.” Zero laughs.

“You guys want a drink? Something to eat? I’m surprised Wizz and Kaz didn’t come with you.”

“Wizz is doing some kind of security upgrade that only he and the people at NASA understand, and Kaz has a thing at the hospital. Something about keeping his skills up-to-date.”

“And I dropped this on you last minute.” Viper sighs. “Look, I’m not going to veto your decision. I just needed to see for myself that this was something you wanted and not something Mercy pushed for.”
