Page 89 of Hate Me Like You Do

“Something wicked this way comes.” Kylie sneers in a reciting way, her pink lips nearing Knox’s stubble covered jaw.

“I didn’t know you could read, Kylie.” I don’t know if she does anything other than paw all over Knox.

“You look happy today,” Knox says flatly to me but I know he’s happy I’m happy. I know my well being is important to him. Even if he fights to never show a single emotion on that infuriatingly perfect face of his.

I knew it the moment he asked me if I liked Reed. The moment he cared that I could have feelings for anyone else. Truly caring for me, for Reed, or for Landon, that in itself is some sort of affliction for him.

There were other hints before that. All of which have caused him to do something...stupid. It’s like he won’t allow himself to love without also suffering.

But when you care, you want them to be happy.

And he wants me happy.

This is how he can make that happen.

“Tell Kylie to fuck off.” I challenge him with a hard command, my lips pursed and waiting.

Kylie’s mouth twists and she shakes her head. “You think you mean something here? You think–”

“Kylie, fuck off.” Knox’s voice hums through the quietness as everyone just stares at him and the astounding words he just said to the prom queen. They wouldn’t dare to speak up about it though.

Not to Knox.

Warmth sears through my chest as a smile almost curves my lips.

Kylie huffs, sending dagger eyes at her companions, many of which follow her wordlessly. A comfort is made in the absence of her presence. The feeling a cheery bubble that gives me a heart-skipping beat as the few students left lingering scurry away when they see Knox’s pointed look at me.

He raises a single eyebrow. A question that I have the answer to.

I take a large step into Knox’s personal space. His body never moves an inch but his head tips lower, meeting my eyes before trailing down to study the smile on my lips.

“Happy now?”

I edge closer yet. How can I make it more clear that it isn’t just Landon and Reed?

“Extremely. After your father goes to sleep–”

“Our father,” he corrects.

“After your father goes to sleep, meet me in our bed tonight.”

His face doesn’t change. Somehow, I expect it too. It doesn’t change into the distant nonchalance or even a small tinge of interest. Even when his words mean so much more.

“Mmm,” he hums. “An invitation that has never sounded so sweet.” A warm palm slips beneath my shirt, caressing my lower stomach just before I take a step back out of his reach. And then another and another.

But I can’t seem to turn away from him.

“Not a chance,” I clip out but in that second his unwavering cruel smile contradicts me.

The evening is quiet when I slip into Reed’s bedroom and sneak beneath the covers of the bed I once called mine. Rays from the crisp evening sun have long since vanished leaving only the welcome of night. A light shines from Reed’s nightstand. It casts sinister shadows over the walls.

I am not afraid. I will not be afraid.

I bask in the light that shines over me. My eyes try to drift shut, heavy and aching for sleep. When my eyelashes brush my cheek, my eyes spring back open.

Not yet. Stay awake.

Quietly, the door eases open. I turn at the small noise, watching Knox enter his room. He lets the door click shut behind him while he eyes Reed sleeping soundly in his bed. Reed wouldn’t be all too thrilled about this I’m sure.
