CHAPTER1

Mission

Zirc

AGELES, WEST SECTOR

Mate. Mate. Mate. Mate.

“ENOUGH!” I growled out loud to calm my beast. My body is thrumming with suppressed energy. My knuckles turned white. Something cracked.

Fuck! I threw the holo gadget against the wall. Some pieces scattered on the floor. What remained of it fizzled and died.

“Wait,” I heard Volks. I knew. Know. My friends are behind me. My body strained to unleash my beast. The problem is, both he and I are in agreement that we should get Brin. My brain is pushing me to continue with the mission. Only I can handle the relic I recovered. I cannot risk bringing this relic to the enemy. Going to Kilo to destroy the Shura was reckless. The only good thing that happened is we recover it. I leave it to Crix and his mates to find its secrets so we can counter its effects.

The Elders were angry that I have delayed too long in this town. They knew of my connection to Crix. They consider him and his mates as my allies. I haven’t told them yet of Brin.

Brin. Damn it. She was kidnapped. Again.

I swear on my blood. When we meet again, I will chain her to me. No more leaving my side. She goes wherever I go. If it means I will retire early, then so be it. For now, I need to trust Coone and Roqs to get her. Roqs has an idea who it might be. Coone is a spy. He revels in this type of mission. He and Roqs will catch up to her. Then Coone and I will meet near the Purple Tribe. Roqs will return to his mission.

I could not even think about Roqs right now. What I learned from Crix.

Fuuccckkkk.

“Zirc,” Crix said cautiously. I refused to look back. I am partially turned. My claws are out. I’m sure my ugly mug is visible even though my body remains the same.

“Are you sure about this? We can find a way to contain the relic while you go.”

“No,” I said, I gritted my teeth. My beast wants to listen. “I trust Coone and Roqs. We know I already wasted so much time dealing with Kilo and making sure Brin is safe.” I breathed in and out. Feeling calmer, I turned towards Crix. He took a step back at the same time Jigen and Volks stepped forward. Volks moved ahead of Crix. Volks can’t help it. He is the protector of the group.

I know my eyes right now are partially turned as well. I focused on Crix’s robes to lessen the tension. “I appreciate your help Crix. All three of you. I know Jigen can contain this relic. Volks, I know you will also help me find Brin if I asked to. However, you know I cannot delay this mission longer. Once I turn this over to the Elders, and they still haven’t - “

I stopped to take a deep breath. Bringing this to the Elders will take a fortnight at most. I despair to think what she is going through right now. Being far away from me.

“She is -“

“My mate, I know.” I clenched my jaw. I glanced. Jigen and Volks were not surprised. Of course, they saw the holo video. She is my mate.

“This is pulling you apart. How can you expect to complete your mission -“

“You know me Crix. I know you all want to help me. Help me get the fastest winox.” I paused. I saw the gleam in Jigen’s eyes. I pulled myself upright. My beast stopped chanting mate. He and I crave Brin’s smell. Her voice. Her laughter. I raised an eyebrow at Jigen.

Jigen placed a hand on Crix’s shoulder. Squeezed it. “Crix is hoping you will go after Brynn. Volks and I made a bet that we know you best. And we are right, you chose the mission this time.”

My heart lurched. Haven’t I abandoned Brin the first time? I left her in my domain. Good thing it was Roqs who stumbled upon her. What if enemies found her first? Or my tribesmen. I will kill anyone who dared to touch her. I almost killed Roqs, my long-time lover.

“It’s good to know you all can still take bets,” I said to take off the hurt in my voice.

Volks just nodded like it’s normal.

Jigen moved forward and Volks let him get near me. I want to scream at them that though I looked calm outside, my beast is simmering on the edges. I haven’t fought this hard with my beast since my pre-trans.

“I modified a winox so it can cut your travel time by half.”

I took a step back. “Will I end up a vegetable after three jumps?”

Jigen chuckled. “You of no faith. This is Jigen you’re talking to. All the brilliant minds on this planet want to crack my head and spill my secrets.”
