When he scowled at me, I tried, very hard, not to tease him. I only reserve that for close and intimate friends. He wasn’t it. His blue fur rippled, a sign that he was about to lose it. Of course, wheneverheis around, or not around, Axad got all tense and bothered.

“He should be here now,” Axad complained. “What if something happened?”

I arched any eyebrow again at him. He was talking about the leader of our Red Guard, the most elite force on the planet. They head all the Purple Guards. There were whispers that only a Red Guard could defeat the Silver Beast. Of course, there wasn’t a good time to test that theory because of my open and complicated relationship with the Silver Beast.

A small bell sounded. Those who do not know the signal would not notice it. However, all the occupants in our table stilled, even Roqs. He paused for a micro second then he was up and out of the door. Axad just a few feet behind him.

“This should be fun,” Sim took his time to stand up. I playfully whipped my tail against his shin. Our friends needed us. Something doesn’t smell right in this situation. There is no such thing as coincidence. Something is up.

The servers opened both door for us. Outside, it was nearing dusk. The air felt brisk this far up in the mountain. When I sniffed, Sim spared me a glance. I intentionally rubbed my shoulder against him to reassure him I was okay.

The first thing I saw, Coone was casually standing beside a building. It was only because I knew what to look for that I could tell it was him. Otherwise, it still amazed me and the others how he can blend with the locals when he was from a different planet. His tunic acted like his second skin and could pass for a member of a Silver Tribe. He even adopted the nuances of the Silver Tribe’s language way better than the Silver Tribe manasties who lived with our tribe.

Crix once tested his blood for mixed manasty genes and came up negative. This just shows that Coone was a very good spy. Zirc proudly told us once that his Neko mate could ask like a ghost if he wanted to. I wasn’t surprised. I also wouldn’t be surprised that Coone can be a deadly assassin as well. This was why he needed to travel with Zirc, Roqs, or with me and Nim if he wanted to be seen. Otherwise, he will end up dead.

I stood beside Sim while Roqs and Axad moved ahead of us. Our other guards were situated discreetly elsewhere. They know not to show themselves when not needed.

Coone straightened up while Roqs stiffened visibly. How could this alien have anything to do with an alpha, a spy, and most of all, the Silver Beast?

Suddenly, Roqs moved forward at the same time two individuals appeared from around the corner. Though Coone was nearer, it was Roqs who reached the alien, and leader of all Purple Guards, Xylythor or Xy. Axad remained where he is when Xy appeared.

“Hmm,” Sim hummed beside me.

Fuck, that was the understatement of the year. When I sawthe alien, I immediately saw the appeal even though his stench drifted to us. Beneath all the bad smell, I smelled somethingappetizing. This is bad.

Yet, both me and Sim walked forward to meet them. Axad remained behind our backs.

Roqs grabbed both of the young man’s skinny arms. He must have come from an impoverished planet. Roqs, Coone and even my cousin Crix were tightlipped about his background. I crossed my arms in front of my chest. No matter, they were all here on my turf. They will tell us.

I was expecting a passionate reunion. I wasn’t expecting Roqs to start sniffing him. He took a deep inhale near his neck. The young lad’s eyes were round.

He was furless.

Sim hissed. Yes, we reached the same conclusion. This meant this alien was more fragile than we thought. We learned from a young age, furless beings from another planet had thin skin and can bruise easily. At least he has some hair. I mean, how do you hold a partner down while having rough and dirty sex when he had no hair?

“Why are there so many smells on you?” Roqs growled low. His tail shifted partially.

Shit. Fuck.

As one, me and Sim backed away a foot from him. We know Roqs. We fucked him when he wanted us. But when he goes Alpha and Beast at the same time, you. Stay. Away.

Even Xy took a discreet step back. He felt the air changed. I wondered if Roqs face changed?

However, the young lad was either too dense of the danger that was Roqs. He had the audacity to roll his perfectly brown eyes. “I’m fine.”

His voice pulled something inside me. What kind of specie is he?

Sim took a step forward, probably called by the voice, but I placed an arm in front of him. We barely know this young lad and he was under the protection of the Silver Tribe’s alpha.

I shook my head once at him and he relented. But Sim’s eyes were slitted.

“You will identify all the manasty you met,” Roqs declared and pressed his nose to the young lad’s upper arm. “Especially this smell,” he sounded as if he was ready to fight off all these unidentified manasties.

I quickly glanced at Sim. That brief glance we knew that something wasn’t right. Sim insisted this lad was Zirc and Coone’s mate. He smelled a different smell on Coone a few days ago. How come Roqs acted like a feralmatedmanasty?

Probably the same reason why Coone hesitated approaching his mate, if what Sim said was true. If it was me, feral or not, no one would stand in between my mate. No one.

Roqs seemed to realize when he visibly shook once, inhaled deeply, then his tail returned to its original form. I thought everyone in the near vicinity breathed a huge sigh of relief.
