I separated the guard’s head from the rest of his body in one sweep of my arm. I was so livid.

No other guards accompany us. I understood, their first priority was to secure Central and the Royals living on this place.

I stopped. The smell got stronger. Fuck. I knew this smell.

I smelled on it on Brynn after she was kidnapped by Ist’s brother. My beast told me,I told you so. I refused to acknowledged it. Because that wasn’t all. This smell.

“Scarface,” I said when the assassin showed up around the corner. He looked older, tougher than his photo. Brynn identified him and I thought he was a gangly kid. Though we were of the same height, he was bulkier than me. He looked relaxed, almost bored. He played his part well. When was the photo last taken? He already had the scar then. But this, this manasty in front of me, he looked about five years older.

“Scarface? Is that what she told you?”

I refused to show a shocked expression. Did he knew Brynn was a female?

He smirked. Pathetic. My skin itched. My beast wanted out. I had never felt this angry before.

“What did you do to Brynn?” my voice took on a lower timbre. There was only one way for him to found out if Brynn was a female. My beast finally acknowledged that Brynn was a potential mate.

“Roqs, alpha of the Silver Tribe,” he drew his sword from his back. “I always wanted to fight you. How is Zirc?”

I did not know why. When Zirc’s name passed his lips, I roared and was the first one to attack him. Our swords clashed loudly in the dungeons. I quickly learned, when he blocked my sword, that we were equally matched.

“Listen to me,” he pushed against mine. “This is not what it seemed.”

“Lies. The guards told me you were the assassin,” I growled at him.

“That is what they wanted you to believe,” he swung upward, dislodging my sword. In doing so, I snagged on his necklace. The crystal bounced on the floor and shattered.

Suddenly, all I could smell was him. My -

Mate.

As one, we lowered our swords and grabbed each other’s head, deepening the kiss from hell.

I thought the vibrations I felt were from the realization that I finally found my mate. The land shook so hard we were forced apart. Explosions rocked the palace. I turned towards the area where we came from. We had to get out of here. Take my mate out to safety. The fuck was happening with me.

A mate.

Enemy?

No, not enemy. Mate.

This was what was wrong when I first smelled him on Brynn. There was something about that smell. My beast told me it was my mate’s smell on Brynn.

Fuck.

“Wait,” Scarface called behind my back. Scarface wasn’t really his name. He was called Trill.

“Roqs,” Axad called and I breathed a sigh of relief. I was out of my elements and did not see this coming. I thought I heard it wrong when Axad whispered, “I’m sorry.”

My body shook as I realized what happened. Axad pointed a laser at me. Was he shooting to kill me or incapacitate me?

I felt myself falling. Before my head could collide on the floor, Trill caught me.

“Leave him. We have to leave now,” Axad, the traitor, urged my mate to leave me.

My beast roared but no sound escaped my lips. I couldn’t even see. I felt my mate being pulled from me but he wouldn’t budge.

“Roqs will be safer here. You know that,” Axad said urgently.
