“Are we not taking it? It’s dying, you heard Sid say so. We might be able to sell its remains for at least half. Its blood is still worth something.”

Scarface thwacked mouthy guy’s head loud enough I can hear it ringing. “What the fruck -“

“- You are better off dead iftheyfind out you stole it.”

“Theeaswants it?” His voice squeaked. “Fruck, why didn’t you say so?”

Scarface dragged him outside without looking back at me.

As soon as the door closed, I trembled. A lot. This is it. I need to make a run for it.

The animal mewled again, like it knew what I was thinking. I felt bad, it’s mewling tugging at my heartstring. I can barely take care of myself.

I stood up and step by trembling step, I reached the front of my cage. I slowly opened the cage door, afraid that it has electricity that will kill me. When nothing happened, I opened it, went out, then carefully closed it again. Though there’s no way for me to really lock it.

My feet carried me to the animal. They called it hiscat but really, it looks like a malnourished and hairless cat. The ears are long and pronounced. I wasn’t really a fan of sphinx cats. I liked them furry but its hazy violet eyes looked at me. Poor cat. There were more white in his eyes when I got up close. No visible wounds that I can see but I can see its ribs sticking out.

I searched for an opening in the cage. There is a lock with digital numbers on it. When I held it in my hand, the lock dropped. Looks like my luck is turning or from what I’ve seen in the movies, this is a trap!

A broken mewl.

Still holding the lock in my hand, I looked up and saw the cat staring at me. Back home, cats like these are feral. They look meek but once I open its cage. Well, maybe it will run on its own.

As if sensing my thoughts, it tried to get up but fell back again. Its head the only thing looking up at me.

Slowly, I opened the cage. It squeaked and waited for something to come in the entrance. My heart is beating a million miles per minute. Yet, something tells me that I need to get the other breathing specie in this space with me.

I looked behind me and searched for a cloth that will not hurt it. I chanced upon a thin bundle that resembled like fur. It’s not impossible that this might belong to a creature killed for its fur. No funny smell though. When I got back and put the cloth near the cat, it hissed. Eyes slitted. I saw near the opening of the cage a dirty rag. I exchanged it and held it. This one stinks. A lot.

“We have to get out of here,” I tried to whisper. Yes, I like to talk to cats like they can actually understand me. Maybe it will work here as well. “Come on.” I urged it.

When it did nothing but stare at me, I placed the dirty rag on its poor body. It did not make any offense. I slowly tried to wrap the dirty rag around it.

It hissed. I stopped. I was trying to place his front paws inside but 1 of them looks crooked.

These bastards! They are sick bastards to do this to an animal! If I can get a chance, I will dunk their heads in the water!

The cat looked on, unimpressed with my internal dialogue.

I avoided its front paws. And what do you know, the cat is ahe. When he’s all tight and bundled up, I lifted it. Though he looks longer, he almost weighs nothing. I ignored its rumbling noise.

Even though I will regret it, I used a long cloth I’ve seen earlier and tied it around my upper body to bundle the cat like a baby.

Thank God for small favors. It did not protest. Now time to escape.

I made my way to door. A few inches from it, it hissed open. The ID worked. Cold frigid air assaulted my senses. If I knew it would be this cold, I should have bundled up some more. There are stairs on the left and right side of me. In front of me is open space. The moons are almost hidden. There’s not much light coming through but I can see the lines of trees beyond the railing in front of me.

Left or right?

I took the left. I noticed mouthy guy going to the left and I’m assuming that’s where they are going to a vehicle or something.

I turned left and walked slowly in the shadows. The cat felt heavy now on my chest. A bundle of warmth that keeps me going.

I almost squeaked when lights suddenly lit up the hallway. There are footsteps approaching. Heavy feet with boots. I scrambled to find another door to escape the hallway. I can’t climb over the railing to escape to the woods. The height is almost 2 floors up.

I can hear them talking just around the corner. At this point, I’m hugging the wall. I’m fully aware I can’t hide myself in this open hallway but no way I’m jumping. My heart is beating so loud I almost missed it.

A door open.
