His hair is damp as if he just showered and his jawline sharp and clean-shaven. When I get inside, Hudson immediately leans over without saying anything and kisses me.

The cologne he’s wearing is an intoxicating spicy scent that fills my senses. His lips are warm and his tongue is cool as he runs it against mine. He slips his fingers around the back of my neck, pulling me closer to him, deepening the kiss, before finally breaking apart.

Our breaths are ragged and my heart is racing as I stare into his dark poisonous green eyes.

“Hey, you’re looking hot today,” he says as he switches the car on and the V-8 engine roars to life as he pulls out onto the road.

My face heats up. “Thanks. I could say the same about you. How are you?”

“I’m good. You?” His voice is steady.

“I’m good.”

“It’ll be an hour-long drive, do you want anything before we leave?”

I open my bag and Hudson watches as I pull out a large packet of lightly salted kettle chips and a pack of M&M’s along with other delicious junk.

He laughs. “You prepared? God, you’re absolutely brilliant, Parker.”

“I’m efficient,” I tell him as I settle back against the cool, black leather.

I feel him casting me a glance and even as he puts his black Hollywood style shades on, the pressure from his gaze doesn’t dissipate.

Hudson moves his hand from the wheel and places it on my thigh and when I look at him, he flashes me a devilish grin.

Immediate heat travels through my body and I settle deeper into my seat as Hudson massages my thigh.

The drive to Hampton Bays is smooth. As we leave Manhattan behind and head into Long Island, I open the window and the cool breeze enters the car.

“Do your parents own a house in Hampton Bays?” I ask, lifting my feet and placing them on the dashboard.

“Yeah, we don’t use it much,” he says.

“How are they?”

He gives me a sharp glance. “Who?”

“Your parents,” I say and then I dare to continue. “They weren’t really happy at the steakhouse.”

There’s an awkward beat of silence and I momentarily fear that I’ve overstepped the line.

“They’re always like that,” he says flatly.

I don’t want to risk going on but now that I’ve started, I can’t seem to stop myself.

“Your mom told me about your sister.” My voice is barely a whisper, but I know Hudson hears me because he presses down on the accelerator and the car starts going faster.

“What did she tell you?” he asks sharply.

“That she passed away,” I tell him.

“She didn’t just die. My mom is delusional. She likes to pretend that Cassie died from some fucking illness, but that’s far from the truth.” His voice is thick with anger and his body is trembling. “She was raped on her 16th birthday and then murdered and left like trash on the sidewalk.”

“I-I’m so sorry,” I whisper. “I didn’t expect that. What happened to guy that…” I trail off.

I hesitantly reach out and touch his shoulder and then I very gently massage my palm against the back of his neck.

Hudson is silent for a minute as he runs his hand through his hair. “How could you expect that? It doesn’t matter. I just don’t want you talking about that again. Do you understand?”
