“I’m a bit embarrassed to say I don’t get the joke,” I confess.

Saxon looks at his brother with amusement. “Be a nice guy and explain it for her.”

“Jesus.” Kip brushes a hand over his face.

Catie giggles and leans forward to speak to me conspiratorially. “It’s when a guy… you know…” She makes a gesture as if she’s throwing confetti over herself. I frown and shake my head. She leans closer so her mouth is near my ear. “When he comes across your throat,” she whispers.

“Oh, shit.” I laugh.

“I’m so sorry,” Kip says.

“No, it’s great,” I reply. “I’m learning a lot.”

Saxon grins. “Do you two want a dessert?”

I blow out a breath. “No thanks, I’m stuffed.”

Catie giggles, and Kip throws her an amused glare. “Will you stop?”

That makes me giggle too, and the guys both laugh.

“Shall we?” Saxon says, and we all get to our feet and start heading out.

“So,” Catie says to me as we turn toward the door, “Will you send me some recommendations for books?”

“Of course. I’ll have a good think.” I follow her out, then stop as I realize the two guys have gone over to the till.

“I didn’t offer to go halves,” I say. “Shit. Do you think he’ll mind?”

Catie laughs. “I very much doubt it.” Her eyes dance, although she doesn’t elaborate.

“Okay.” I blow out a breath, looking through the window at him. He’s talking to Saxon, and as I watch, he nods, glances at me, then looks back at Saxon and smiles. They’re talking about me. Maybe discussing what’s going to happen next. Oh jeez. Now my nerves have returned a hundredfold.

Chapter Five

Kip

“You really like her, don’t you?” Saxon says as we stand at the till.

I touch my card to the reader. “Yeah.”

“She’s got that classy, cheeky thing going on. I knew you’d be head over heels as soon as I saw her.”

I give him a wry look and pocket the card. “I’m not head over heels. We’ve only just met.” I look outside, where the two girls are waiting. “But yeah. She’s gorgeous. And funny.” My gaze lingers on her as she glances at me. Then I smile at Saxon. “Thanks for coming tonight.”

“You’re welcome, and it was fun. We haven’t done this much, have we? Double dated, I mean.”

“One of us was always in between relationships.”

“Yeah, I guess.”

We turn from the till and walk slowly toward the exit. “Did you have any luck with Craig?” he asks.

This morning, we had a couple of reporters call to ask for details on the sale of MOTHER to Sunrise. Saxon burst into my office to ask what was going on, and so I had to tell him the stunt that Craig pulled yesterday. Craig called his PA to say he was staying home sick today, and we haven’t been able to get hold of him. I’m kinda glad. I think Saxon would have ripped his head from his shoulders.

I shake my head. “His phone’s still going to voicemail.”

“Shit.”
