“Yeah. They hammered out the final details, to continue the metaphor.”

“You said he met with Jack this morning? So he’s not still in the meeting?”

“No…” He sighs. “He’s meeting with another member of our team.”

“You don’t mean Craig?”

“He told you about him?”

“Yeah. I thought Craig was away?”

“He called yesterday to say he wanted to meet this afternoon. Kip tried to move it, but Craig was insistent.”

I wonder why he didn’t tell me. I guess he was worried that I might think he’d be too distracted during our time together. I don’t care if he’s distracted, but it would be a shame if Craig spoils it.

“I know he’s very upset about what’s going on,” I say.

“He’s taking it personally, which is fair enough after the things Craig said about us.”

I watch him signal at the roundabout and head toward the city. “About you two being close?”

“Yeah.”

“He does realize you’re twins?”

Saxon smiles. “I can see why he likes you.”

I’m not quite sure what to say to that. “Apparently Craig’s wife also said it’s one reason his ex left.”

He snorts. “Lesley left because she was a selfish bitch who expected the world to revolve around her.”

“She wasn’t your favorite person, then?”

“She fucked him over, and not in a good way. Anytime you see him being cynical or wary, it’s her fault.”

“He loved her?”

He glances at me. “You don’t have to worry about her. She’s old news.”

“I’m not worried.” It’s true; I’m not. My relationship with Kip is a shooting star. He’s lit me up briefly, but I know he’ll be moving on soon. In a way it gives our relationship freedom. We don’t have to worry about baggage—not that I have any, where men are concerned—or laying down foundations for the future. There’s only here, today, now.

“You should have told us at dinner you were Alice from Wonderland,” Saxon says, heading toward the hospital. “I’ve listened to your podcast. I’d love to know more about it. I thought maybe the two of you would like to come to dinner over the weekend and you can tell us all about it.”

“That would be nice. Have you mentioned it to Kip?”

“Not yet.”

“I’ll check with him. I don’t know what he’s got planned. I’m only here for three nights.”

“Have you told him that?” he asks, amused.

“What do you mean?”

“I think he’s hoping you’ll stay a bit longer than that.”

“I told him three nights.”

“He’s likely to ignore that.”
