“Come on, Eddie. Make room, make room!” Bill shouted at the man sitting next to Cammie, so he could wedge himself somewhat between them.

Cammie gave Eddie a winced smile and mouthed ‘sorry’, but he didn’t seem to care. At least she had confirmation that the guy sitting next to her was Ed Fulton and that he was very much alive. Two down, two to go.

“I’m going to spot darling Cammie her first bet.” Bill slid a five-thousand-dollar chip from his pile.

Cammie sputtered over the amount, choking on her heart as it tried to hammer its way out of her mouth.

“Now, don’t you argue, my pet. I’m forcing you to be here, so let’s see if you’re as lucky as I think you are.” Bill put a heavy hand on her shoulder.

Cammie squirmed, her body desperate for flight, but she grounded herself on the stool, forcing herself to stay put. She didn’t want to create a scene by running out of the casino full tilt in order to get away from Bill’s attention. The guy irritated her like nothing else, especially since she really, really didn’t want to waste her time gambling, even with someone else’s money.

She’d only watched Zane for a few minutes, and yes, she understood the concept of Blackjack, but she was no risk taker. Every time Zane had hit, her gut feeling had been to stand, even if the cards were low.

She wiped her hands on her skirt. There was no getting out of this now, not if she was committed to her investigation—which she was.

She forced a smile then placed her bet.
