“This could have all been prevented had you believed me in the first place.” Cammie gave him a sugary smile full of poison. “None of this would have happened if you had investigated instead of leaving it to Zane and me.”

“Yes, well, uh…” he sputtered. “It seemed unplausible that…uh…”

“Yet there was a body in the freezer, correct?” She already knew the answer because Chief Ross had stopped in at the infirmary to check on things and had updated her just before Zane had woken up.

“Yes, unfortunately, we did find the body of a deceased male.” Captain Evans cleared his throat. “So, it appears that you did, in fact, find a dead body in your cabin.”

“Hmm.” Cammie noted the captain’s lack of apology. “Tell me something…” She made sure he was looking at her. “Do you think, my boss, Sabine Cowan, will keep you on as captain after I tell her how gloriously you fucked this up?”

His face bloomed red as he opened his mouth, then closed it, gaping like a fish desperate for air.

“After I told her about Cal’s failing fetish cruise business, she got on the phone with the bank right away. She and Cal go way back, and she’s been looking at expanding Cowan Enterprises into the travel industry for a while now. All it took was my endorsement—you know, because she values my opinion so much.” Cammie reveled in the captain’s obvious discomfort. “She’s negotiating with your brother as we speak. He seems eager to unload the ships now that he knows just how bad things have gotten.”

“I do apologize, Miss Sheppard,” Captain Evans said, the smug smile finally wiped from his face. “I, uh, was focused on the missing money and saving the company.”

Cammie nodded but didn’t give him the benefit of a response. Let him wonder what she would say to Sabine. She turned back to Zane.

The captain stood there for an awkward few minutes, clearly unsure how to proceed.

She wanted him gone and knew she’d have to be the one to dismiss him now that she’d cut his balls off. “You better make sure there are no hitches in my boyfriend’s care, Captain, or Sabine will hear about it from me.” She didn’t bother looking up at him to deliver her warning, partly because she was sick of the sight of him but partly because the word ‘boyfriend’ had slipped out and her brain was recalibrating.

“Of course, Miss Sheppard, I’ll make another call right now to ensure that Mr. Roberts gets the best care there is.” He didn’t wait for her to acknowledge that she’d heard him, he practically speed walked out of the door with a curt goodbye to the nurse.

Cammie smiled to herself as she brushed her fingers, the undamaged ones, along Zane’s cheek and accepted the fact that somewhere along the way, her heart and her head had decided he was the one for her. It was unexpected and unplanned, but it suited Cammie perfectly.
