Man, how things have changed.
Addison and I are pretty good friends now.
“Crazy,” I mutter.
Even crazier is how there are times—and they’re becoming more frequent—when I wonder what it’d be like if she and I explored more than friendship.
I mean, we’re wildly attracted to each other. That hasn’t changed. I see it in the way she looks at me when she thinks I’m not paying attention.
But I am.
I’m always tuned in to her.
And me?
Fuck, I definitely want her. She stars in my fantasies all the time.
But I’d never tell her that.
Yeah, even though I think she’s feeling me, I don’t want to ruin what we’ve built. It’s better to leave things status quo.
We’re in a good place.
Arden pulls in, and, needing to focus on something else, I jump out of my vehicle.
We meet up in the lot and head into the restaurant.
Once we’re seated in a booth, Arden looks over at me curiously. “Dude,” he says, “you look like you have a million things on your mind.”
Guess my head’s not cleared of Addison after all.
Still, I’m not about to share my romantic thoughts about her with Arden. He and Nils know we’re getting along these days, and that’s all they need to know. The friendship she and I have forged feels sacred or some shit.
So I just tell Arden about the magazine feature and act like that’s what has me preoccupied.
“Whoa, damn.” He lets out a low whistle. “That is fucking great, man.”
“I know.” I nod. “I think so too.”
“And Addison landed it for you all on her own?”
I feel a sense of pride for her when I reply, “She sure as fuck did.”
“Impressive.”
The waiter comes around to drop off menus, and after he leaves, Arden, flipping his menu open, offhandedly says, “That Addison is some woman. Hot and smart. Fuck, maybe I should ask her out sometime.”
Though I laugh and say, “Maybe,” inside I’m bristling.
No, more like raging.
I feel like screaming, “Don’t you fucking go anywhere near her!”
Or maybe I should just reach across the table and punch him in the face.
Wait, no.
He’s my friend.
