The door opens, and I skate out of the box just as Nils is clearing the puck.

Fortuitously, it lands right on my stick.

Yes!

I’m on a breakaway and skate as quickly as I can into the opponent’s zone.

I’m fast, so within seconds, it’s just me and the goaltender.

I know this guy and all his moves from when we were teammates.

He likes to go low.

So I go high, shooting the puck up above his left shoulder.

It goes in.

Goal!

The crowd boos, but my teammates on the ice converge around me, hugging me and patting me on my helmet.

I’m thrilled that I made up for my penalty by scoring a goal.

The rest of the game goes by quickly, and we end up winning by a score of 6-3.

In the locker room, the mood is jovial. There’s a lot of joking around and laughing. I love when it’s like this.

I shower and slip on the same navy pinstripe suit I wore to the game. I’m ready before a lot of the guys are showered and dressed. That’s okay, as there’s a little time till we have to board the bus to head to the airport and fly to our next stop—Columbus—for one more away game tomorrow.

I can’t wait to get back to Addison. She’s all I can think about. Texting, FaceTiming, and talking on the phone, those things just aren’t enough. I want to see her, and hold her, and love her like only I can do.

Soon, I tell myself.

We already made plans for her to be at my house when I fly back tomorrow after the game. It’ll be late, but I want her in my bed and ready for me when I get home.

The things I plan to do to her…

While I’m daydreaming about my girl, one of our trainers, Rob, a middle-aged guy who’s been in hockey forever, comes over to me. “Hey, Harrington, someone outside the locker room wants to see you.”

Huh?

“Who is it?” I ask.

He shrugs. “I don’t know. Just some girl.”

Okay, this is weird. It can’t be a fan, as not just anyone can waltz around the locker room area.

Maybe it’s a reporter.

Standing up from the bench I’m seated on, I head out into the hall.

I look around but don’t see anyone.

But then I catch sight of a girl with a long blonde ponytail, wearing jeans, tall black boots, and a baby blue faux fur jacket. She’s leaning against the wall a bit down from me, right where the arena curves.

“Kristi?” I blurt, stunned.
