“Dude…” He shakes his head. “Since you’re going to be spending time with Willow, you should know something.”

“Shit, man, what?”

Sighing, he says, “She just had her heart broken. She was in a long-term relationship with a guy named Liam. But it’s over, like, for good.”

“What happened?” I ask, more curious than I should be.

He shakes his head. “Willow walked in on him cheating on her.”

I wince. “Fuck. That sucks.”

“Right?” He nods. “It was just a few months ago. And though she’s been doing well, Addison tells me she’s still upset. I’m sure that’s what they were talking about before we came down here.”

“Ah, got it. Now it all makes sense.”

And it does.

Hayden then shares, “Yeah, it was bad—really bad. So much so that Willow has sworn off men or some shit like that.”

“Hey.” I hold up my hand. “I think I see where this is going. Don’t worry about me, though.” I lower my hand and continue, “I’m not planning on hitting on her or hooking up with her or anything like that. First, I wouldn’t disrespect you guys by treating her like a fling. And second, you know I’m not interested in becoming involved with anyone. Serious relationships just don’t seem to ever work out for me.”

He assures me, “I know. I wasn’t insinuating that. I just thought it was something you should be aware of. Not just because of them talking all intently like they were but, you know, in case Willow seems down at times or moody or…I don’t know, man, whatever.” He shrugs. “I think you get the picture.”

“I do.” I nod once. “And all is duly noted. Don’t worry, I’ll be ready for anything.”

Chuckling, he says, “Cool.”

The game begins, so Hayden turns up the volume.

I’m glad the conversation about Willow is over, but I’m happy we had it. Now I have yet another reason to not ever get involved with her.

I just wish there were no attraction between us.

But there is.

I’ll just have to be sure we never act on it.

Willow

Ihad a great time at dinner on Sunday night, but I regret not having a chance to say good night to Arden before he left the house.

Really, it was my fault.

The guys were down in the game room watching a playoff hockey game. Addison asked me at one point if I felt like joining them, but she and I had just had an emotionally draining discussion about Liam.

I just wasn’t up for it.

So I turned in early, before Arden even left.

I slept great and felt immensely better the next day…and even more like myself the day after.

Both of those days, Monday and Tuesday, Addison and I spent a ton of time together, just like we planned to do from the start.

But now it’s Wednesday, and they’re gone. She and Hayden left for the airport a short while ago to fly out and start their vacation.

So here I am, kind of at a loss on what to do next. Work doesn’t start until next week, and I really don’t know my way around the area all that well yet. I’m not even really in the mood for exploring, especially not all by myself.

Sighing, I adjust my long ponytail and sit down on the edge of my bed.
