My eyes flutter open, and he’s gone. Like he was never here with me, except that I can still smell the citrusy spice of his cologne, like a phantom.

Sinking down on the weight bench, I stare at the desolate reflection that watches me.

“Fake,” I remind myself.

A piece of my heart crumbles at the sound of the downstairs door closing.

“Not real.”

Another shatter when his car fires up in the driveway.

So, if everything between us was so fake, why does the heartbreak feel so real?

Chapter Thirteen

MIA

Well, well, well, America. Looks like Tucker’s been spreading some tall tales. Come to find out, it wasn’t Mia Maddox in the sex tape leaked last month. During a surprising press conference, Michaela King has provided proof that the shadowy seductress isn’t Tucker’s ex at all…it’s Michaela. This is another hit to the singer’s reputation after being linked last year to the breakup of Jax Bryant and his Denver Delight, Charlie Walker.

The big question remains why Tucker claimed the video vixen was ex, Mia. And, if he lied about that, what else is he hiding?

MIA: Hey, I haven’t heard from you.

MIA: Everything okay?

MIA: I’m not sure if you remember, but I’m leaving Monday for Ireland.

MIA: I’d like to see you before I go.

MIA: Garrett.

MIA: Still haven’t heard from you.

MIA: I miss you.

MIA: I feel like I’m losing my friend…

MIA: Garrett?

I sit on the couch Saturday night, scrolling through the texts I’ve sent over the last several days. True to his word, Garrett left and hasn’t been back. Well, at least when I’ve been here. His things have slowly disappeared from the house—clothes, the spare set of glasses from his nightstand, a book he started reading the other day. He must be coming here at some point.

I fly to Ireland for three months the day after tomorrow. And I don’t want to leave things the way they are between us.

I toss my phone aside with a sigh as Evie comes into the room.

“Still no response?” she asks, flopping on the couch next to me.

“Nothing.”

“Do you think he blocked you?”

“What?” I stare at her. “Why would he do that?”

“Mi, you broke his heart.”

“No, I didn’t,” I deny. “We always knew that our situation—”

“Your marriage,” she interrupts.
