“Our situation was temporary.”

“Do you think that matters when he loves you?”

“I love him too. He’s my best friend.”

“Not the same thing, babe.”

“He hasn’t blocked me,” I argue. “I’ve gotten read receipts on all the messages I’ve sent.”

“He’s seeing them at least.”

“What do I do, Ev? I feel like I’m losing him.”

If I had realized that staying married had meant losing my best friend, I would have said to hell with my reputation and gone through with the divorce. At least then I’d still have my best friend.

Would you though?

Nights spent snuggling on the couch, more than snuggling on the couch, our first time—his first time. The little smiles and conversations. Would I truthfully give all that up?

But I had, right?

“You’re a confused mess right now, Mi,” Evie says, interrupting my thoughts.

“Why won’t he call me back?”

“Put yourself in his shoes.”

“Our shoes aren’t any different,” I argue.

“Oh, really?” She lifts one eyebrow as she stares me down. “Did you relocate from your house to his?”

“He said he liked my house!”

Right?

“Did you put yourself aside and ask what he wanted or needed?”

“Well, no…” There’s no excuse for that behavior.

“Mi, I was here when he got home on Monday. Did he actually tell you what happened?”

“Only that a crowd of reporters was waiting for him at Arabesque.”

“Did you know that there were concerns about him being able to keep Arabesque separate from his relationship with you? That he promised his boss he could keep the two separate?” she asks.

“No.” My voice is a whisper.

“Do you know that it wasn’t his choice to come home early that day? He was sent home to avoid any more complications from the reporters asking about your new role and how you were going to be starring in a romantic movie with your ex-boyfriend. They even had an artist cancel a shoot on them.”

Shit.

“They did?” Guilt settles in my stomach like a rock. “How do you know all of this, and I don’t?”

I can’t help the little flavor of jealousy that tinges my words.

“Two things. First, you have nothing to be jealous about when it comes to Garrett and me.”

“I’m not jealous,” I deny.
