“All those questions. All those answers. Every time. Garrett.”

“So why do you keep telling me you’re just friends with him?”

“I—I—” I’ve run out of excuses. “I’m scared.”

“Scared of what?”

“Of losing him.”

“Seems to me you already did,” she points out.

She’s right. Without Garrett, my home turned into a house again. A place and not a feeling. It’s a sanctuary without a heart. It’s not home.

The month with Garrett has been the best one of my life.

“I miss him, Ev.”

“I know you do,” she assures me.

“So, what do I do?”

“What do you want, Mia? That’s going to determine what you do.”

“I want Garrett.”

Stripping away all the denials, the excuses, the fears, that’s the bottom line. I’d rather have had Garrett for this month than have every acting part in the universe I used to think I wanted.

“For…?” she prompts.

“Forever. I want him with me. As my husband. And my friend.”

“Freaking finally, woman. I never thought you were going to admit that, and we’d end up miserable in Ireland.”

A watery chuckle escapes me at her exclamation.

“How do I get him back?”

“What would he do if the situations were reversed?”

“He’d show me he cared. My favorite movie, snacks, everything. Just for the two of us.”

Isn’t that what he’s always done?

“What’s his favorite movie?”

“Jurassic World.”

She cringes. “Not the vibe we’re going for here. Anything else?”

Standing up, I kneel next to the cabinet under the TV, ready to search his collection for any insights. My heart plummets, and emotion lumps in my throat when I open the door.

He’s gone. Every movie he brought with him in the move—and there were a lot of them—is all gone. He’s been buying DVDs since we were in junior high. Never stopped even when he downloaded them all to his phone too. The empty shelf is only a reminder that he was ever here to begin with. That, and the gaping Garrett-shaped hole in my heart.

“Evie.” Tears rim my lashes.

I’m too late.

“What? What’s the matter?”
