“Ooh, bugging Garrett about what?” Meredith asks Claire, her eyes lighting up at the prospect of tormenting me.
“Don’t you both have jobs to do?” I ask, frustrated that they won’t leave me the fuck alone to wallow in peace.
Meredith shrugs.
“Finished for the day,” Claire says.
“What video?”
“The one from the other day. The reschedule,” she clarifies before turning to Meredith. “Garrett’s love life sucks.”
“Been there, done that,” Meredith says.
“Same.” Claire nods like they’re both wise women of some group, ready to dole out answers and truths.
I’ve had about all the truths I can stand. Not interested.
“Why is Garrett’s love life so bad?” Meredith asks.
Claire snorts. “Because he’s in love with his wife.”
“What?” Meredith’s forehead wrinkles in confusion. “Shouldn’t you be in love with your spouse?”
“It’s complicated,” Claire responds.
“Isn’t it always?” Meredith asks.
“Exactly. Simply because you’re deliriously happy with your rock star.” I motion to Claire. “Doesn’t mean the rest of us want that.”
Meredith opens her mouth, but I hold up a hand.
“And you’re engaged to the owner of Arrhythmic, so you’re equally bad with trying to set up the singles in your life.”
She holds up her hands in surrender. “My lips are zipped.”
“Garrett, you’ve been in love with her for ages,” Claire says.
“So?”
“So, you’re going to give up? Just like that?” she retorts.
Meredith’s gaze volleys back and forth between Claire and me.
“She doesn’t want me, Claire.” I can’t keep the hurt from tingeing my voice.
“You don’t know that,” she fires back. “You didn’t give her a chance.”
“A chance to what? Divorce me first? Break my heart?”
“That sounds too much like bitterness, Garrett,” Meric adds from the doorway.
Shit. Were we being so loud that he could hear us from his office?
Claire and Meredith stay quiet as they wait for my response.
“It’s not bitterness,” I say. “It’s self-preservation.”
“Ah, that makes sense.” He nods in understanding. “Mesdames, may I have a moment to speak with Garrett privately?”
