“Ames?” His expression grows serious as he studies me. “Don’t leave me hanging here. What role?”

Here goes nothing. I take a deep breath and let it out.

“Motherhood,” I whisper.

“Mother—” A variety of emotions cross his face. Confusion, concentration, and…happiness? “Ames, are you telling me what I think you’re telling me?”

“Yeah?” I clear my throat and say it with more conviction. “Yes.”

He boosts me in his arms, his lips fastening to mine.

“How?” he asks, finally breaking the kiss.

“Even a virgin knows the answer to that,” I tease, brushing my lips against his.

“Ex-virgin,” he mumbles against me. “When?”

“I took a test yesterday.”

I’d barely finished when he’d come into the bathroom. The nerves he was distracting me from weren’t for the awards show—or at least not entirely—it was having news like this to share with him. Excitement and nerves had swirled in my belly. Love too. Love for him and for our baby.

“I know this wasn’t the plan. We weren’t even trying.”

“But we weren’t trying not to,” he reminds me.

When the choice had come up to get a new IUD or not, we’d talked about it. And I hadn’t gotten a new one.

“Are you—what do you think?” I nibble my lip until his finger brushes against the flesh.

“What do I think?” A smile stretches across his face. “I think I’m the luckiest man in the world. I have you. And now we’ll have a baby.” He shifts to lay me on my side, his hand hovering over my flat stomach.

My fingers cover his and move our joined hands to rest on my stomach.

“I need to get everything confirmed still, but the test said it was ninety-nine percent accurate.”

“Pinch me.”

“What?”

“Pinch me,” he repeats, and I find the skin of his arm. “This isn’t a dream.”

I shake my head, overwhelmed by the love I have for the man staring at me like I’m the center of his universe.

“No, not a dream.”

“Do you have any idea how fucking much I love you?”

I wrap my arms around his neck, pulling him to me until his forehead rests against mine. “As much as I love you?”

“So much.”

I smile against his shoulder. “Thank you.”

He leans back, his eyes searching mine. “For what?”

“For loving me. For being patient enough to wait for me to open my eyes.”

“Ames, you don’t have to thank me for anything. Waiting for you? I’d have waited forever.”
