“Llama.”

She thrusts her hand out, holding the lead up to my face, reminding me why she is actually there. Right, Chris. The llama. Taking the rope from her, I let out a laugh. The fucking llama. Although, if Chris is what got her cute little behind over here, then maybe the guy deserves some extra feed at dinner.

“Llama,” I say, laughing again.

Aimee smiles at me, but it’s forced. I can see in her eyes that she’s happy to see me, but the rest of her is tight, like she feels trapped. That is the last thing I want her to feel.

“I was just thinking of you, you know.”

“You were not.” Aimee gives me a playful shove. There’s my girl.

“Was too. You’re never far from my thoughts these days.”

The look on her face softens, nerves falling away completely, a brighter smile taking over. One that sends a jolt through me. It’s bad enough that standing this close to her is making me hard. Seeing her visibly react to my words is enough to kill me.

“Six…”

Stepping in closer, she runs a hand down my front, the heat from her fingertips searing through my sweaty T-shirt. I groan, my hands aching to pull her closer. Tonight, tonight, I remind myself. Tonight, I can hold her for as long as I want, without worrying who might see. Problem is, tonight is not coming fast enough.

“Sixten!” my father’s voice shouts.

Shit…

Aimee jumps back, all the love and sweetness on her face a moment ago falling away in an instant, replaced by fear.

“Go hide in the barn. I’ll take care of him.”

“But…how…”

“Trust me, Ames. Now go…stairs to the hayloft are just past the tack room on the right.”

Aimee nods, giving me a wink before she takes off. I watch her scurry toward the barn, her adorable backside looking good enough to eat. Fuck, I have it bad for her. But I can’t think about her ass right now. I need to focus on Dad and getting him back into the house.

Chapter Three

AIMEE

My heart feels like it could beat right out of my chest. Sucking in a deep breath, I walk over to one of the bales of hay and plop down on it. I have no idea how long I’ll be up here, and can only hope I’ll be able to leave with enough time to get home to shower. I have a hot date after all.

Then again, based on the look Sixten was giving me a moment ago, maybe I could go looking like this.

That is one of the things I love about him—how he accepts me for who I am. No part of him is put off by the idea that I’m covered in dirt and farm animal all day, or that my hands are often a funky color from dyeing fleece. He gets it. Half the time he smells like cows. But he also understands the joy I find in getting dressed up—even if that means a nice pair of jeans—and going out. He understands me. I love him; there is no doubt about that. My only doubts are how much longer we can keep up the sneaking around. Playing Romeo and Juliet was fun at first, but now I’m stuck hiding in a hayloft, all so his dad doesn’t find out I brought home their llama.

“What’s Chris doing out?” Roy Sharpe’s voice carries up into the loft.

“No idea, just saw him wandering up the drive. I’d say there must be a hole in the fence, but none of the cows are out, so who knows.”

“I should go check.”

“I can do it in a bit, Dad. Don’t worry about it.”

I hold my breath, waiting for Roy to respond. I haven’t the slightest idea where Chris is normally kept. If he’s held in one of the back pastures, maybe I can slip out while they’re there. Although, if it’s the one up front…well, there’s no way of not being noticed.

“You’ve got that date, don’t you? Wouldn’t want you to miss it.”

“It’s fine. She’ll understand.”

“Not a good idea to keep a woman waiting.” I bite back a laugh. It is the kind of thing I imagine my dad would say if I had a brother. It might only be one comment, but it is enough to see why Roy and Dad had been buddies. They have the same way about them. “Go get ready. Wear something nice to impress her. And maybe consider bringing whomever this gal is by so she can meet your mother and me.”
