“And by ‘help out,’ you mean growing vegetables.”

He gets me a spoon, and we sit in the hall on a bench next to a table. “As well as making dinner, washing pots, and changing bed sheets when it’s your turn.”

I smile. “I think I like it here already. Can I ask you a personal question?”

“Sure, but I’m not promising I’ll answer it.” He averts his eyes, looking to one of the large windows.

“How did you lose your congregation? How did you end up at the shelter?” I dip the spoon into the bowl and taste the delicious soup. Aligator shifters live in congregations rather than packs like wolves.

“That’s two questions.” Our eyes meet, and I look away first so I can concentrate on the food.

“Yes. Maybe I can’t count. Will you tell me, or is it a secret?” I glance at him again.

“I’m still part of my congregation. I don’t live at the shelter full time. Doc’s vision is something my family supports, and we help out when we can.”

“That’s very kind of you.”

“Yes, well you shouldn’t believe everything you hear about alligators. We’re actually very nice when you get to know us.”

I think back to the store, where I acted cautiously. “I’ll remember that next time I need rescuing.” I smile, and he laughs.

“I’m full of surprises.”

“Okay, tell me something else you don’t think I’ll know about the shifter world.”

“This should be easy since you’ve lived a sheltered life.” He rubs his hands together, and I playfully roll my eyes. Other than the wolves, I don’t know much about other animals.

“Have you heard of hybrid shifters?”

“Isn’t that a myth?”

“If you bite me right now, we could find out.” He arches an eyebrow. I don’t think he’s being serious, at least not about me sinking my teeth into him.

“You’ll have to wait until I’ve decided if you’re cool enough to be a wolf.”

We both laugh. “Hybrids get to choose a mate that’s from any species.”

“Technically, anyone can do that.”

“I meant and they can still have children.”

“When wolves mark each other, it usually strengthens their bond. If I bite you, would that make you my mate?” I finish up my soup.

“No. Only a bite on the neck solidifies a mating bond. A hybrid mark is usually on the wrist.”

“That’s good to know. If it gets rid of my feelings for Colt and a chance to find someone on my wavelength, maybe I’m the one that needs the upgrade. He might leave me alone then.”

He frowns. “Do you think he’s still looking for you?”

“Probably.”

He shows me around the shelter and then to the showers before leaving me to clean up. It’s weird because this place already feels like home.

Chapter Six

BEA

I’ve been here a couple of days and I easily settled into a routine. After breakfast with my new friends, I head to the greenhouse and tend to the plants. Knox joins me a few hours later.
