He pulls me out of the room and towards the basement where they took Knox. He opens the cell door and shoves me inside. “If you want to be with the river rats then you can stay down here. Enjoy the cold, hard prison.” He locks the door and I’m helpless to stop him.

I drop to the floor. “Did he hurt you?” Knox says.

“No.” I shake my head.

“What happened?” He comes over to me and checks me over. Someone must’ve given him clothes as he’s wearing cargo shorts and a ripped t-shirt.

“I told him we couldn’t be together.” We stare at each other.

“So, he locked you up with me?” He frowns.

“No. That was probably because I kicked him in the balls.” I bite my lip.

“Ouch. Remind me never to piss you off.” We both laugh, and although the situation is bad, at least I’m not alone.

“I’m not normally violent.” The pain in my head starts to ease.

He touches a few strands of my hair at the front, and it feels nice. “I know you’re not.”

“We’re going to get out of here.” I’ve survived so much; this can’t be the end for us. Colt won’t get to decide my fate.

“I’m not sure how. Nobody is coming to rescue us, and we’re stuck down here.” We move over to the stone slab and take a seat. A few of the stones move when I sit down.

“Oh, well. We should give up now, then,” I say with sarcasm.

“That’s not what I meant.” He shakes his head with a smile.

“I’m not giving up hope, but we should make a promise to each other or something, just in case only one of us gets out.”

“How about we fulfill a wish for each other. Is there anything you’ve wanted to do that doesn’t involve leaving this room?”

I’m unsure where he’s going with this. “There is one thing.” I want to be rid of Colt forever, and there’s one way he’ll never change his mind about us being together.

Knox’s tongue darts out, and he licks his lips. “What is it?” He watches me intently.

I suck in my bottom lip. This might be the craziest idea I’ve ever had, but I’d rather die than be by Colt’s side. He’s never going to let me leave, and I won’t live a half-life so he can follow the shifter rules. By the time he realizes he needs me and shouldn’t have locked me in the cellar, it will be too late.

“I want you to bite me.” I hold out my wrist.

Knox’s eyes look like they’re going to bulge out of his head. “You want me to change you into a hybrid.”

“Yes.” I frown, unsure if I’ve said something wrong. “Why? What were you going to wish for?”

“I was going to say a kiss. It’s not as daring as yours, though.” He smiles, and I don’t feel like I’ve made a mistake in asking him to change me.

“You want to kiss me more than experiment with shifter magic?”

He licks his lips again. “Tasting you will be sweeter.”

I smile. He has a way with words that blocks out all the bad things and makes me focus only on him. I lean in and press my lips to his. He grabs hold of the back of my neck, pulling me closer. His tongue dances with my tongue, and his warm lips glide perfectly over mine. “Wow. Maybe I was wrong. That was magic.”

“Now who’s the smooth talker.” He kisses me again, and it’s just as good as the first time. We make out for a few minutes and a tingle starts in my core. He makes me feel alive, and the bulge in his trousers is enough to let me know he’s enjoying himself.

“Are you ready for your wish now?” Our kisses have been amazing, but we have other things that are more important right now.

I swallow the lump in my throat. “Yes. Let’s do this.” I hold out my wrist, and Knox watches me as he bites down. It hurts like I expected, but it isn’t until it starts to glow that the real pain starts. It burns like a hot poker, and I can’t help screaming out at the agony. I can hear Knox in the background, but everything is just noise until, eventually, it all goes black.
