“What the hell did you do?” Colt shouts as he bursts into the cell. Bea’s out cold as I hold her in my arms. He pushes me off her, and I let him. I’ve never seen a hybrid transformation, so I don’t know what’s supposed to happen. “Bea. Can you hear me?” He shakes her.

“What’s going on?” Carlos says as he and some of his men enter the room. They must have heard her screaming.

“He’s bitten her,” Colt says, holding up her wrist and showing my teeth marks.

“You know what this means,” Carlos spits out.

“He’s killed her?” Colt asks. His eyes are full of pain, so I guess in his own way, he does care about her.

“No. It’s much worse. Move away from her.” Carlos steps back into the hallway, and that’s when the first shot is fired. Chaos breaks out as everyone starts to panic. People are shouting and the Gulf pack empties out of the cellar.

Gunfire echoes in the background, but it’s Colt I have to deal with. He leaves Bea on the floor and runs at me, taking me down. We both struggle for control. I manage to throw a few punches until he pins me to the floor. I snap my teeth at him. He fixes his hands around my neck and begins to choke me. I try to get him off me, but he’s too strong. I’m losing the battle, and I try to reach for something I can use as a weapon.

That’s when I see Bea moving closer with a stone slab she must have picked up from the edge of the room. She thrusts it up in the air and brings it down on Colt’s head. He hits the ground like a sack of potatoes. I cough until my breathing returns to normal. Colt’s blood spills out onto the floor and he doesn’t seem to be breathing.

“Are you okay?” I ask Bea.

“Yes. Are you?” She helps me to my feet. “What do you think is happening out there?”

“I’ve no idea.” We listen to the groans and shouts for a few minutes.

The bullet sounds stop, and we carefully make our way upstairs.

“There you two are,” Kean says like he’s just found us in a cupboard at the store.

A nervous laugh escapes Bea. “You don’t know how relieved I am to see you.”

“I have that effect on people.” The way he’s joking must mean the Gulf pack has been neutralized.

“I’m glad you haven’t lost your sense of humor,” I say.

He sniffs the air. “I see you two have been busy.”

“We didn’t have sex,” Bea says, stating the obvious. Having an over-sensitive nose isn’t always a perk of being a shifter.

“Not yet, anyway,” I say with a cheeky grin, which earns me an eye roll from each of them.

“You did get a little frisky, though.” Kean raises an eyebrow.

Bea frowns in confusion.

I breathe in deeply to get a better understanding of what he means. Bea smells of wolf and alligator. It’s not my scent that’s rubbed off on her, it’s her. She’s a hybrid now, and she smells divine. Ignoring my brother’s insinuation, I try to bring us back to the moment. I need to talk to Bea alone about her new situation. “What made you come here?”

“When Jeremy said you’d gone to rescue Bea, I knew you’d need some help.” I want to protest and tell him I had it under control, but the truth is, I definitely did not.

“Thank you,” Bea says.

“Yes. Thank you.”

“Let’s get out of here.” We regroup with the rest of the congregation that came to save us.

“How are we getting home?” Bea asks, looking around. I can’t run with her in wolf form, and until recently, she wouldn’t have been able to join us in the water. Now we’re free, I hope she doesn’t regret her decision of letting me bite her.

“You’re one of us, so you can join us in the river,” Kean says.

Bea looks at her wrist. “Did it work?” She touches her face and chest. “I don’t feel any different.”
