“I’m controlling my destiny.” He drops a lingering kiss on my cheek, and I lean into it. Knox has become important to me, and his affection warms my soul.

“With seeds?” I ask in confusion. Since becoming a hybrid, we’ve both said we’re writing new rules for the shifters’ way of life, but I’m not sure how a few plant embryos affect our future.

“It’s time we get our own cabin and create a garden around it.”

I’ve been sharing his room at the alligator congregation since we decided to live together. I love my new family, but it would be nice to have a bit more space.

“We’ll be waiting a long time if we’re going to build our new home from seed.” I laugh.

“Us coming here today is the distraction. By the time we return to the congregation, there may be a surprise for you.” He playfully raises an eyebrow.

“You didn’t?” My heart swells. He’s so much more than I ever expected to find in a partner.

“Oh, I did, and you’re going to adore it.” He sounds confident, and I have no doubt he’s right.

We say goodbye to our friends and head back to base. I’m finding it hard to contain my excitement. After parking up at the main food hall, Knox blindfolds me before leading us farther into the compound. The path crunches under my feet as we make our way towards the surprise.

He eventually stops walking and places his hands over the blindfold. “Are you ready?”

“Yes.” He uncovers my eyes to reveal a beautiful wooden cabin surrounded by shrubs and a few trees. It’s absolutely breathtaking. It’s modern, yet in keeping with nature.

“Please say something. Do you like it? I tried to design it as eco-friendly as possible.”

“You managed to organize building the cabin in one day?” It’s unlikely even a congregation of shifters should pull this off so quickly.

“No. I’ve made sure you avoided this part of the lake for the last few weeks. Today, they brought the furniture and a few new plants.” He points to a swing that decorates the porch.

“It’s beautiful.” I try to take in the detail, but there’s so much to look at. The plants, compost patch, and flowers are just a few details I can see from this spot. Solar panels and moss cover the roof. It’s unbelievable how much effort has been put into the building.

“Do you think so?” He smiles, watching me with marvel.

“Yes. I’m speechless. Nobody has ever done anything like this for me before.” Happy tears flood my eyes as emotions wash over me. Knox pushes them away with the pad of his thumb.

“I didn’t mean to make you sad.”

“I’m not. Everything is perfect. You’re a great guy.”

He rubs his nose against mine. “I’m glad you think so because I want to claim you as mine.” I look deep into his eyes and all I see is love.

“Forever with you won’t be long enough.” We kiss passionately.

“Come on. Let’s take a look inside.” He takes my hand and leads the way. Most of the house is made from wood, and there are plants inside too. This is my dream house, and Knox is my dream guy. We look around before settling on the balcony overlooking the lake.

We kiss a few more times before I expose my neck to him. He runs his tongue over my collarbone and his fingers over my shoulders. He caresses my skin until his mouth settles on the nape of my neck. He bites down hard, claiming me as his, and I’ve never felt as at home as I do right now.
