Silently, Pope stepped back. Suddenly chilled, I hugged myself, trying to ignore the shivers of unease that swirled in my gut.

"Better get back to your friends, Little Red." He lifted his thumb to his mouth, licking the finger that had fucked me so effectively. He cocked an eyebrow.

"Unless you're looking to join my club as one of the house whores?"

I stiffened. “Excuse me?"

He shrugged. "Just saying. If you want a fun way to pass the lockdowns, stay with us. You'll get plenty of cock." He reached out to toy with one of my curls. "And we could have fun finding your boundaries."

I stumbled backward, pressing into the chain fence. "Is that what you think of me? That I'm just after dick?"

He frowned. "Aren’t you?"

Pulling the tattered remains of my dignity around me, I forced steel into my spine.

"You may be decent in the sack, Pope. But today proved you'll never be the kind of man worth a second glance."

I watched my words land, watched the pain flash across his face like a slap before he hid it away, his blue eyes turning to ice.

"Fuck you, Jules."

Anger and pain morphed into a desperate, fearful brew.

Hurt him before he hurts you.

I turned on my heel, giving him my back. "Too late. You already have."

He spat on the ground. "I wouldn't fuck you again if you were the last woman on earth."

I flicked him the bird over my shoulder. "You're a child, Ben. Go trade barbs with someone who gives a shit."

I slipped through the gap in the fence and headed back toward the bar, struggling to fight the tears his callousness had rendered.

I'd asked him to hurt me, not destroy what remained.

I stumbled across the yard, finding Lilith searching for me in the half-empty parking lot.

"Fuck," she admonished, pressing a hand to her chest as I stepped from the shadows. "You gave me a fright."

I linked my arm in hers, craving the contact. "Sorry. I needed some air. Are we heading off?"

"Mm." She guided me through the jumble of parked cars, motorcycles and trucks. "Audrey wants to run some numbers. Said she has a plan to see us through the pandemic."

I forced Pope from my mind.

"Well, she's the genius. If she says jump, I'll jump."

As we walked under one of the parking lot lights, Lilith glanced at me, her face freezing as she stumbled to a halt.

"Olorun mi!" she gasped in Yoruba. "Who did this to you?"

Her fingers touched a sensitive spot on my neck—no doubt a place where Pope had left his mark.

I covered it with my hand. "No one."

"Someone did this. Who? Tell me!"

I shook my head. "It was consensual, Lil'. No one made me do anything I didn't want to."
