“Dearly beloved, today we’ve gathered here…”

His words trail off as I glance toward Kate, only to find her watching me already. Her eyes narrow as she turns back to the pastor, but they dart toward me every so often. I’m not sure if the pastor sees it too and gives up on us or if it’s part of the protocol, but he tells us to face each other.

I take both of Kate’s hands in mine as we repeat our vows, sliding the matching golden bands over our ring fingers.

“I pronounce you man and wife, yo—”

I don’t wait for him to finish; slipping my hand at the small of her back, I pull Kate to me and seal my mouth against hers, not caring the least bit that people are watching. No, I dip my wife back and kiss her with everything I have in me, sealing the promise we just made.

People cheer as I pull her up, my forehead pressed against hers.

“Once in a lifetime, Katherine Santiago.”

She kisses me once again. “Once in a lifetime, Emmett.”

Chapter Three

KATHERINE

After the ceremony, we were swamped by guests wanting to congratulate us. Emmett’s hand is firmly wrapped around my waist, holding me close to his side and not letting go. And you won’t hear me complain about it.

And then there are the photos.

So many photos.

Us alone, with our bridal party, family, and friends. By the time we’re done, the sun has already set, and somebody has turned on the little twinkling lights that the guys put on behind the barn, giving the place a magical look.

I lean my head against Emmett’s chest, letting out a happy sigh at the sight of our loved ones already eating, dancing, and chatting.

Emmett cups my cheek, tilting my head back, his eyes meeting mine. He stares at me for a heartbeat as if he’s seeing me for the very first time, his finger gently rubbing over my cheekbone, the gold of his ring flashing in the corner of my eyes.

My husband.

Emmett was finally mine.

“You, okay?”

I flash him a smile. “Yes. Just tired, that’s all.”

“I feel you, baby. C’mon, let’s get you something to eat,” he urges, rubbing his palm over the small of my back.

My stomach rumbles at the mention of food, between throwing up before the wedding and the fact that we haven’t had a few seconds of free time since I didn’t get a chance to eat anything.

“Yeah, I guess I could eat something.”

“You’re telling me. I don’t know about you, but with all the work we had to do this morning, I don’t think I had time to put anything in my mouth.”

“Neither did she,” Becky chimes in, joining us with a plate in her hand when we get to the buffet table. She gives me a pointed look before shifting her attention to Emmett. “Make sure to feed her.”

“That’s the plan.”

I roll my eyes at them before grabbing my plate. I carefully select a few things I think I’ll be able to stomach, making sure to breathe through my mouth so I can avoid all the smells and a potential trip to the bathroom.

Together we get to the table where our friends are already sitting and eating. We chat with them as we finish dinner, and then Miguel gets to his feet, clinking his knife against the glass to draw everybody’s attention.

“If I can have a moment.”

People settle down, eyes turning toward us as Miguel clears his throat. “As the maid of honor kindly informed me, and if you know Becky, you know you don’t want to get on her bad side. Trust me. I should know since I’ve done my fair share of doing exactly that.” More laughing. “Anyway, apparently, as the best man, I am expected to give a speech tonight, so if you’re not in the mood to listen, I suggest you get up and leave.”
