Chapter Three

GIRL

“You’re blushing again.” Jason nudges me with his shoulder as we sit outside the next day to eat our lunch. The weather has been beautiful, and I find myself enjoying the late summer blooms more than I did this time last year. “Are you going to tell me what happened?”

Cain and Abel.

The school has been against their presence inside the building with me, so they spend their days outside, waiting for the bell to ring. It’s horrendously dumb that they can’t have this time to do as they please.

“No,” I finally answer Jay. I want to tell him what went on. I want to confide in him, but he’s a boy. Can I even do that without him laughing in my face or making crude jokes?

“Come on, you have to give me something, or I’m just going to start guessing.” He winks when I glare at him.

Nah. He wouldn’t be so cruel. Out of everyone I’ve ever known in my life, he’s the one who’d be supportive and ask a hundred questions before he went on to grill the brothers.

“They finally made a move, didn’t they?” My eyes flare at his summation. “Yeah,” he chuckles. “I thought they would sooner or later with your birthday coming up.”

“What does that mean?” I frown as I pop an apple slice into my mouth.

“Ah, sweetheart, you really have no idea.” He shakes his head. “Boys’ jaws drop when you walk down the hall. They’d follow behind you like little obedient puppies if I didn’t threaten every damn one of them with a beatdown by the entire team if they so much as breathed near you.” That’s surprising.

“Why would you do that?” I’ve never noticed this attention before.

“So many damn reasons. Chief among them is those men there.” He looks over to my shadows; my eyes follow, and I find them watching us. When Jay clasps one of my hands between his, Cain steps forward before Abel places a hand on his arm to hold him still. “You see that? They’ve been waiting. From the moment I first saw them with you, I knew they would lay claim to you. But they had to wait.”

“Because of my age,” I whisper, laying my head on my knees to observe them openly.

“That’d be my guess. They’re what? Thirty? I suspect they might have even fought their attraction to you at first, debating if it was wrong. But something happened between yesterday and today. What was it?” He squeezes my hand.

“My parents are selling me to Walter Charles.” A chill passes through me at the memory of how the older man’s eyes touched on me and the grip he held me in. I was revolted. I wanted to run screaming from the house. “They’re letting him take me for a trial run this weekend.” Turning my head to meet Jay’s shocked expression, I ask him, “What does that mean?”

His eyes blaze with fire as he scrubs a hand down his face. “It means they’ve given him permission to do whatever the fuck he wants to you, sweetheart.”

“Rape me.” Big tears roll from the corners of my eyes as the realization hits.

“Yeah, I’m thinking that’s on the list of things.” His tone is low…menacing. “We need to get you out of here. Away from those people.”

It all feels like part and parcel of my life. Endless pain. And to know my parents are selling me to endure the worst kind, breaks my heart. “What’s wrong with me?” My voice cracks on the question, and my throat constricts as Jason pulls me into his arms.

“Not a fucking thing. It’s all on them.” I know I should believe him, but it’s tough when I’ve endured so much in my short life.

“What’s going on?” Abel’s strong voice sends shivers racing across my flesh.

“You’re letting her be sold,” Jason snaps out.

“Jason,” I hiss.

“She won’t be.” Abel sounds so sure.

“Yeah? So, what are you two going to do about it?” Jason challenges, and I look up to see both Cain and Abel standing over us, a myriad of emotions flickering across their faces.

“Not for you to worry about,” Cain responds.

Jason releases me to stand at his full height. “The fuck it’s not. She’s my best friend. I’m the only one fighting in her corner. If you have a plan, I want to fucking know what it is because that son of a bitch will take all the good things about her and warp them to his sick fantasies. I might not be some richie-rich dick, but I hear the rumors. I know what people say about that man, and he’s not for her.”

“We know.” Abel crosses his arms as Cain crouches next to me. “He won’t lay a fucking finger on her.”

“You’re getting her out of here, then?” The bell rings before we get an answer, but from the way the two brothers look at me as I gather my things and get to my feet, it tells me more than they’re revealing to Jason.
