Sky opened his arms and shrugged. “I’m running out of ideas with him.”

“Honey, I’m sure you will figure it out.”

“Yeah, eventually.” He ran his fingers through his curly strands and smiled. “So, did this work?”

“The whole ‘distract me with your problems to avoid me stressing out’?”

A sweet smile played on his lips. “Precisely.”

“It did,” I chuckled as I patted his face. “I’m very proud of the man you turned into. I never imagined you’d be… this much of a golden boy.”

Sky rolled his eyes. “I’ll always be your golden boy, even despite all the drama I caused, right?”

“That’s what being a parent is about, honey. I’m not going to pretend I didn’t suck at being your parent when you were little and I’m sure I made mistakes with Natalie as well. But this isn’t a job you can prepare for. Life throws many curves at you and you need to think on your feet. That’s all you need to remember when it comes to Eric. He just wants his dad’s attention, and he is willing to do whatever it takes to get it.”

“But… he has my attention.”

“Honey, let’s not pretend half of your media drama wasn’t for your biological father. No matter what we tried and how much attention you got, there was always this empty spot in your heart. You would never acknowledge it, as you didn’t want to hurt Aiden. But you were risking your dream career for two minutes of fame.”

“But then I realized that beating him on the field gave me much more satisfaction and shifted my focus.”

“Whatever made you realize that is exactly what Eric needs.”

Sky grimaced. “It was Aiden actually.”

Surprised, I opened my mouth to ask him what happened, but before I could the door of the room flew open.

“Hazel! Why are you sitting in the dress?” Sarah squealed and rushed to me. She pulled me up. “I need to steam the bottom of it, it's all wrinkled now.”

“No one would notice,” I muttered to myself, making her gasp.

“Yes, they will… the camera will zoom in to it, and there goes my beautiful career.”

A smile tugged on my lips. “I see you are as dramatic as ever.”

“Even more,” she agreed, pulling out a chair. “Stand on top of it and let me do my job.”

“Don’t you have people for that, aunt Sarah?” Sky asked, leaning back on the sofa, enjoying the little back and forth.

“Yes, I do, but I’m not leaving this to chance,” she brushed him off. “You can go and entertain your uncle.”

Sky laughed. “I’m not six anymore. You can’t brush me off.”

“I don’t know, kiddo, I saw your son and almost did a double take. It’s freaky how much you two look alike. I was having flashbacks of your annoying teenage years.”

“Look at you, living through those with Mable.”

Mable was Sarah and Elliot’s daughter and she was an angel. Despite how loud and outgoing both of her parents were, Mable was shy and sweet and I loved her. It always pained me that she and Nat never grew as close as Sarah and I were.

Sarah threw a look at Sky, making him laugh. “You are still a little devil.”

“Don’t worry, I know Mable is adopted, as there is no way you and uncle Elliot had a child who is that sweet.”

I gasped, as Sarah tried getting pregnant for a long time and it was somewhat of a sore topic for them. But to my relief she chuckled.

“I sometimes feel the same.”

Sky’s grin widened before he stood. “I’ll get going, God forbid the dress has a wrinkle and you all make it my fault.”
