Oh, my god. It was happening. He was really asking me to be his wife.

“What, no witty comeback? This day will be forever remembered as the day…” Aiden started teasing me as he wiped my tears with his thumb.

“Yes,” I said, pushing my nose to him. “Yes, to everything, and frankly, you can go ahead and remember this day forever.”

Aiden captured my lips with his in a passionate kiss, swallowing up all my words. His tongue pushed into my mouth, colliding with mine and he wasn’t even kissing me. He was devouring me with his lips. A shiver ran through my body, as I pushed myself closer to him, my fingers entangled in his blond strains and I kissed him back with the same forceful passion. It was our little battle of tongues as we swam in the sea of happiness.

“Wait…” he pulled away, remembering the ring he dropped between us as we kissed and picked it up. “Give me your hand.”

My chest felt tight from the way he took my left hand in his and put the beautiful, sparkly diamond ring on my finger.

“It’s a perfect fit.”

“It looks incredible,” I muttered in awe, staring at the light bouncing off the diamond. It wasn’t a huge diamond that I’ve seen others wear, it was the perfect size for someone who didn’t like rings, and it was also pure based on how it sparkled. I never thought I’d love a jewelry piece as much as I fell for the ring.

“Do you like it?” he asked, fear shaking his voice. “We never talked about rings… and I’ve never seen you wear one.”

“I love it,” I smiled at him. “It’s beautiful… thank you.”

Aiden kissed my forehead and hugged me to him, my left hand resting on his chest. “I can’t believe you’re mine.”

“I was yours, even before the ring.”

“I know, but this feels different…”

I stared at the ring and I hated to remind myself how he wasn’t rich before, how he had to have a job at Starbucks to cover his own expenses. And from his first professional soccer contract he got me a ring.

“You know, you didn’t have to…”

“I wanted to.” Aiden shook his head. “I wanted to prove to you that I might ask you to move across the ocean with me to follow my dream, but you will always come first.”

“Money doesn’t impress me,” I grinned.

“You can’t deny that the ring is beautiful, and I didn’t go for the huge flashy ones. I wanted to find one imperfectly perfect that was more unique than any of them. Just like you.”

If I wasn’t held up by his arms I would have melted into a little puddle on the carpet.

“Stop,” I covered his mouth with my hand and watched the sun bounce off my ring. “You are making me blush.”

“Guess I made the right decision not doing it on graduation day.”

“Oh my Gosh,” I sighed. “I would have murdered you. You didn’t even know if I was going to want to be with you or not.”

“For a second… I really thought you wouldn't even come to say hi.”

“I was strongly debating that. But I guess, you can only walk away from the love of your life once.”

Silence settled onto us, as none of us wanted to talk about that impromptu breakup we had after Christmas last year. What mattered is that we found our way back to each other.

“So… you want a June wedding in the Plaza Hotel in New York?” I wiggled my brows jokingly. “We totally need to get married before your fame explodes and our guest list becomes 500 people including all FC Barcelona. You are already at celebrity status since they signed you.”

Aiden looked a bit uncomfortable, as if he still believed himself to be a kid from Fresno who was good at soccer, but nothing more.

“Wait… like… you understand what it means that FC Barcelona signed you, right?” I asked him carefully as we never talked about it.

“That I’m good?” he asked, uncertainty lacing his voice. “They are one of the best teams in the Champions League. It’s a bit surreal they signed me. I’m sure I’ll be benched a lot until I prove myself…”

“Baby, I know you will very early on make an impression on them and there will be no stopping you after that. And I’ll be there with you every step of the way.”
