“Sorry, to bother you during sex, but this couldn’t wait,” he mumbled in a low voice.

I arched my brow. It must have been serious for him to drag himself and us out of bed. “Want me to check on Sarah?” I asked when I noticed my best friend missing.

He extended his phone towards us. “No. I think you should see this.”

Aiden and I exchanged a puzzled look and my heartbeat sped up. I was prepared for the worse. Something leaked about us, or some compromising pictures. The possibilities were endless even if none of these things really existed.

But the moment my eyes dropped to the handle name, nausea hit me. I never understood what I saw in him when we were in high school, but his messy brown hair and big brown eyes got everyone going crazy. Especially as he was sitting behind the table wearing a tailor-made suit that fit his body like a glove, showing off all the work he did off the field. There was nothing wrong with the picture other than the logo hanging behind him and the jersey he held.

He signed with Real Madrid, the biggest rival of FC Barcelona where Aiden was playing.

“He just made this fucking personal,” Aiden growled.

“It’s fine,” I muttered. “Just don’t let him piss you off.”

“Last time we played together, I barely got through without punching him.”

“Only because I punched him before you,” I reminded him with a soft smile. “He was trying to throw you off your game because you are better.”

“I hate the way he talks about you,” Aiden groaned, his free hand running through his hair. “I really can’t mess up my first season. Even if we don’t get far in the Champions League, we need to win the Spanish League.”

“You will,” I wrapped my arms around him, holding him tight. “Jake isn’t your battle to fight. One day, when he grows up, he and I will talk. Until then, as long as he stays away from Sky, he can play for whichever team he wants. Because you are better than him. On the field and off the field.”

“He just threw me off my game,” Aiden muttered, his lips running through my hair.

“That’s because you love me. Sorry,” I smiled at him, trying to joke it off, but I knew his concern was heavy. Last year Baywater Dolphins lost the entire NCAA soccer season because of the infamous game where Jake couldn’t keep his mouth shut. It took Aiden a lot to land the contract. Now, it was time for him to leave the personal off the field, even if in the history of the two clubs it never happened before.

“At least you know he will never be signed by your team,” Elliott added with a grin, making Aiden laugh.

“That would be my worst nightmare. No way in hell.”

I grinned as I kissed his cheek. “You have nothing to worry about. I’ll still come and watch your games. Even if he’s there. I promise.”

And that was a promise I intended to keep no matter how hard, because Aiden deserved it.

Present day

I was all set to go. I smoothed down my Mikado silk dress that had a beautiful A-line skirt and the top was elegant, yet sexy as it was off-the shoulder enhancing my chest and collarbone. I looked like a princess and I had to hand it to Sarah. It wasn't over-the-top crazy. It was elegant and classy, just like I wanted it to be.

Taking a deep breath, I glanced at Natalie, who stood in the entrance door with her bouquet of flowers, glancing outside where all the guests lined up.

“Ready?” she asked, her grin wide. Ever since she decided to go pro, she was more focused, settled and I loved seeing her like that. There was a time, a couple of months ago, where we worried about her future.

“Ready as I’ll ever be.”

“You are the most beautiful bride,” she squealed, giving me a half hug.

“You really are.” A voice behind me said, making my veins freeze. I watched the confused expression take over my daughter’s face, before it morphed into disgust.

“What are you doing here?” she said, scrunching her nose. “Sky doesn’t want to see you!”

Her protectiveness over her older brother should have made me smile.

“It’s okay,” Sky said, catching me by surprise. “He wants to talk to mom.”

I didn’t want to turn around, even after all those years, I didn’t want to face Jake. But I wasn’t a kid anymore, I was an adult with two kids and if needed I could face my ex without drama. As long as Sky was okay with it.

“What are you doing here?” I repeated my daughter’s words.
