“He’s a good actor, I’ll give him that. It took months for me to see the real him.”

“Why not break up with him then?”

“I know. I should have,” I admit. “This makes me sound awful, but I liked the attention I got when I was with him. The parties I was invited to, the people I met.”

Evie’s face twists.

“But it wasn’t just that,” I rush to continue. “Even that got old after a while. We’d fight. Break up. And he’d turn back into the guy I met at first.”

“A really good actor,” she reminds me.

“I figured better the devil I knew…” But in reality, I have no rational reason for staying with him. For getting back together with him.

And now I’ve finally had enough.

“Hasn’t anyone put two and two together? He was photographed with other girls before we broke up,” I say with the tiniest pout.

“You didn’t have to release a mutual statement.”

“Roni said it would be better that way.”

“Roni’s been around a while, Mi. Are you sure she has your best interest at heart?”

“She’s my agent.”

“She’s also Tucker’s,” she counters. “Maybe if you were out living it up like he was…”

I shake my head. “No thanks.”

“I’ve gotten a couple of calls about scheduling some dinners for you. Want me to start coordinating some?”

“Evie, you’re the best assistant I could ask for, but no. I’m not interested in falling into another relationship right away. Not again.”

That had been my story since Roni discovered me in a high school play when I was sixteen. She’d immediately redone my image and connected me with one actor after another, the most recent being Tucker.

“Have you heard anything from the studio since the statement?”

“No. And I really want this part, Ev. It’s so different from what I’ve done before.”

“I know.”

“No more short skirts or shirts that go down to here.” I point to a spot well below where I’m comfortable showing cleavage.

Evie giggles. “Not if you’re playing Catherine Parr.”

“The one who survived.” I laugh when Evie joins in on singing the line from the musical.

“Have they announced who’s playing Thomas?” she asks.

“Not that I know of.”

“Did they say when you would hear?”

I shake my head. “My audition was only last week, and they weren’t sure on timing, so the producer said they’d call me when they had a decision.”

“Do you think all this Tucker shit will hurt your chances?”

Her question puts voice to a fear I haven’t admitted out loud. Being with Tucker—on and off for the last two years—had often meant that my name was front page news, but rarely for anything good. The title of “America’s Sexiest Couple” certainly isn’t going to earn me better parts. It’s depressing how many producers and directors weren’t interested because they didn’t consider me a serious enough actor for them.
