“Try telling them that.”

My phone pings with a news notification, and I grab it off the table.

“Nope. Not happening.” She grabs my phone and spends several minutes on it before handing it back to me.

“What’d you do?”

“Turned off all your Tucker notifications.” She shrugs. “It won’t block everything, but at least you’ll stop getting minute-by-minute updates.”

I should have done that.

“Something is better than nothing.”

“So when is Roni releasing your statement?”

“What statement?” I ask.

“You are putting out a statement that it’s not you in the video, right?” When I shake my head, her eyes widen in shock. “What, why?”

“Roni said that I shouldn’t dignify the video with a response.”

“Mia—”

“It’s not any different from what they told me to do after the breakup,” I rationalize.

Even if it feels different. Lying low after a breakup is one thing. Not standing up for myself when faced with this type of thing? It’s grating more than I want to admit.

“I’m not sure…” Evie looks as skeptical as I feel.

I open my mouth to respond but am cut off by my phone vibrating in my hand.

“Shit. It’s the studio.”

“Well, answer it,” she encourages.

“Hello?”

“Mia?”

“This is she.”

“Mia, this is Fiona calling from Featherlight Productions. We met at your audition?”

“Y-yes, Fiona. I remember. How are you?”

The sigh that comes through the line doesn’t bode well. “Well, honestly, Mia, I’d be a lot better if I wasn’t currently working damage control on not one, but two of the people who auditioned for the movie.”

“Tucker auditioned?”

What the hell? Tucker is all about action films. When I mentioned this audition to him, he had laughed and told me to stick with what I was good at—roles that involved a lot of good looks and few lines.

“I’m not at liberty to disclose the other candidate, Mia. But we do need to discuss your current PR situation.”

“It’s not me. Despite what—”

“Truthfully, whether it is or not isn’t my concern. Or my boss’s. What is our concern is the amount of publicity you’ve been receiving over the last several weeks.”

“I know you told me—”
