“We told you we were taking a massive chance in considering you for a role unlike any you had ever done before,” she interrupts again. “We were all impressed by your audition, Mia.”

Pride spreads through me at her compliment, but I know the other shoe needs to drop.

“But?” I brace myself.

“But when we said that you needed to avoid the limelight, we meant it. We didn’t want to see front-page stories of club fights with reporters.” Tucker. “Out of control partying.” Tucker again. “Nude sunbathing.”

That one had been Tucker too, but he’d assured me that the beach was private. I don’t think Fiona cares about that though. Or the fact that I hadn’t been nude. I’d lain on my stomach and untied my bikini strap. When Tucker and I were discovered by reporters, I’d jumped up without thinking about my top, which was left behind in the chair.

“I remember,” I say quietly.

“And instead of avoiding publicity, not only have you landed yourself on every major outlet by breaking up with your boyfriend, but now the press is salivating over this video.”

“I—” I look at Evie who shrugs helplessly.

“Are you still interested in this part?”

“Yes! Very much so.”

“Then I suggest you heed my advice. No more stories like the ones we’ve seen last two weeks. Any more bad publicity and I won’t be able to convince my bosses to keep you in the running. I’m putting my reputation on the line by pushing for you as hard as I am.”

“I promise,” I reassure her. “Is there any word on when the decision for casting will be finished?”

“At this point, I’m not entirely sure. There are still several actresses being considered for Catherine.”

Do I even have a shot anymore? I want it so bad I can taste it.

“I understand.”

“I hope you do, Mia. I’ll be in touch.”

The phone beeps in my ear and I lower it.

“That didn’t sound good,” Evie says.

“Not really, no. Between the breakup and the sex tape, I’m this close”—I hold my fingers up by a half an inch—“to not being considered for the role anymore.”

Breath hisses between her teeth. “Shit.”

“Right?” I close my eyes on a groan. “Did you know Tucker auditioned for a part?”

She rolls her eyes.

“I can’t believe they’re serious. Why the hell would he audition for something like this? It’s completely outside of what he says he wants to do.”

“Exactly. So, what the hell is he up to?”

I don’t trust Tucker any farther than I can throw him.

My phone vibrates again, and I look down to see a text.

ASSHOLE: Hey, baby. Can I swing by so we can talk?

“Speak of the devil.” I wave my phone at Evie.

MIA: I have nothing to say to you. And don’t call me that.

ASSHOLE: Don’t be mad.
