“This is my chance.”

“Why? Why is this so important? There will be other roles.”

I shake my head. “There won’t.”

“You can’t know that for sure,” he tells me.

“I do though.”

“You don’t know that,” he repeats.

“I do,” I argue.

Don’t make me say it out loud, Garrett.

“How?”

“If I don’t get this part, I’m retiring. I’m leaving acting.”

“For what?” he asks.

“Huh?”

“What are you going to do if you’re not acting?”

“I—I have no idea,” I admit. “I’m twenty-five years old, and the only thing I’ve ever wanted to do was act. I just didn’t expect to still be in the same roles I started in.”

“You’ll leave acting permanently?” His eyebrows jump with surprise.

“Permanently.”

“It’s that important to you?”

“I can’t—” My voice breaks. “I can’t keep taking these mediocre parts. Parts only based on how I look. I need more.”

“More?”

Tears blur my vision, and I blink them away. “More.”

“Enough that you’re willing to stay married to me?”

I nod. “You say it like it’s some hardship.”

He grins, and my own lips curve in response.

“Isn’t it?” he teases.

“You’re my best friend.” It’s the only answer I can give him. “What do you think?”

Chapter Four

MIA

“What do I think?” He yanks a hand through his hair. “Ames, this is a mess. That’s what I think.”

My heart drops into my stomach. “So that’s a no?”

“I—I don’t know.”
