While I opened the boot of his car, she kicked out catching the lights and smashing the cover. Her muffled screams suggested he’d wedged something in her mouth but she was still managing to make enough noise for me to worry.

Revenge was bundled into Carlo’s boot and even after it was closed, she still kicked and made a racket.

“Take the back roads,” I whispered, and he nodded. The last thing we needed was for the police to stop him for a broken rear light and find her in the boot.

I followed in my vehicle and the way Carlo drove a little too fast over the unmade road made me laugh. I was sure Revenge would have a banging headache.

He came to a screeching halt and our scene was played out. Shouts, gunfire, bashes to the panels of the car silenced Revenge.

I popped open the trunk and reached in for her. “Quick, come,” I said, and I pulled off the hood and the handkerchief from her mouth.

“I…” She was clearly terrified.

I grabbed her wrist. “I’m not here to hurt you. Come, quick!” I laced my voice with a sense of urgency while pulling her from the boot. “Keep low,” I said, tugging her and running to my vehicle.

Carlo lay on the floor, facing away from her as if shot. He groaned and I wanted to laugh. His acting skills were akin to a third rate shoot ‘em up movie, the kind where one shot had the victim spiralling and writhing for ages before playing dead.

“I need to see who that was,” she said, trying to slow and turn.

“No you don’t.” I had no intention of her looking anywhere other that my vehicle. I opened the rear door, making sure to take a quick glance that the child lock was in place. “Get in.”

I threw her across the seat, slammed her door, and then climbed into the driver’s seat. I hit the accelerator and wheelspun down the dirt road.

“Who are you?” she shouted above the engine noise.

“Someone sent to rescue you.”

“I don’t…” She didn’t finish her sentence but I had half an idea what she was about to say. I had to play dumb, however.

“Don’t worry. I’ll get you home soon.” Although I still wore the mask, I smiled into the rear view mirror.

Revenge righted herself and sat. She was still bound at her wrists. Her hair was a mess, more so after I’d whipped off her hood and seen tears tracking down her cheeks. For a moment, I felt awful that I’d caused those tears. Then I remembered how much of a bitch she could be, a great actress, and half a million dollars was about to hit my account.

“Please don’t take me home,” she whispered.

I stared at her in the mirror, pretending to be shocked at her words. I pulled the car over and turned in my seat.

“Please, I’m begging you,” she said, her voice firmer.

“Your father has been searching for you,” I said.

She huffed and shook her head. “I’m sure he has. I’ve been trying to get away for years.”

“I don’t understand,” I lied.

“Please, whatever he’s offering you, I can pay.” I highly doubted that, but appreciated she needed to use whatever tactic she could. “Can I stretch my legs? I’ve been cramped up for ages.”

I wanted to laugh. Revenge must have thought me an idiot but I decided to play along. She wasn’t strong or fast enough to get away from me. I slid from me seat and opened the rear door. I reached in to grab her elbow and help her from the car. I left her hands bound figuring that being unable to swing her arms would slow her down. She made a show of stretching and sighing, raising her face to the sun and gasping in.

“I’ve been kept in the dark for so long. They…” she sniffed and I waited. “They attacked me,” she said, giving a pretend sob at the same time.

“In what way?” I asked gently, obviously knowing it to be a lie.

I wanted to applaud her; her performance was worthy of an Oscar. She fell to her knees sobbed and wailed yet not one tear left her eyes. Under my mask I smiled, wanting to laugh out loud.

“I need some facts confirmed. The man who took you from the bar, who was he?” I knew of course, but wanted to see what her official comment would be. Her father would demand this, of course.

“I don’t know. I was with a girlfriend and the next thing I knew, I woke up in a cave of some kind. A man came to see me, he wore a similar hood to you,” she said, staring up at me.
