“But, Garrett, we’re your family,” Libby responds with a sniff. Shit. I didn’t want to make either one of our mothers upset. But it sounds like Libby is.

“We would have wanted to help you celebrate. We’re so happy for you two. We’ve been waiting for this moment for years,” Mom adds.

What?

“Mom, Garrett and I are friends,” I start, and he gives me a sharp look. “Neither of us knew how the other felt until last weekend. It just sort of happened.” He shoots me a thumbs up.

“Well, are you at least going to let us throw you a reception?” Mom asks next, and I cringe. I don’t want them to spend money on something that isn’t real.

“It’s fine, Mom. Garrett and I will plan something once both our schedules settle down.”

“But—” she starts again.

“We promise,” Garrett adds. “Work has been insane for the two of us, so that’s why we haven’t had the chance to discuss the details.”

“I’m holding you to that promise,” Mom says. “Well, if you aren’t doing a reception—”

“Not yet,” I correct.

“What about a nice family dinner?”

Garrett’s gaze catches mine, and we both nod. There won’t be any way to get out of this. Might as well get it over with.

“Okay. When?” I ask.

“Next weekend,” Mom and Libby say at the same time.

I suddenly feel set up. “Next weekend?”

It’s better than I thought, but not nearly enough time.

“We were already planning to barbecue,” Mom says.

“You always barbecue together,” I remind her.

“Next weekend is fine,” Garrett jumps in, and I glare at him.

Et tu, Garrett?

There’s some more squealing, and both Garrett and I wince.

“Can’t wait to hear all about your wedding!” Julie says.

“Sunday night. Six o’clock. Don’t be late. What am I saying? You’re with Garrett, so you’ll be on time.”

“Gee, thanks, Mom,” I grumble.

“Speaking of late, ladies, we need to get going since we have a function tonight.” Garrett’s always had the ability to smooth things over with the moms. He was the one to talk us out of trouble as kids, and he knows just how to speed things along tonight, since the moms hang up shortly after.

“You still have your magic powers,” I joke after they’ve finally hung up.

He shrugs. “Guess so.”

His gaze travels my body, and the fire from earlier makes a reappearance. “You look nice.”

The orange wrap dress has a plunging neckline and a slit that hits mid-thigh. If there’s such a thing as classy-sexy, that’s how this dress makes me feel. Or at least, that’s the way I feel with Garrett’s attention centered on me.

“Thank you. So do you,” I respond. “I wasn’t sure you had a tux.”
