“Well, I am a married man now.” I wink at her, and she giggles.

“You’re such a dork.” She rolls her eyes and turns back to the bathroom.

I close the distance between us, wrapping my arms around her and nuzzling her neck.

“Do you remember what I said yesterday after our kiss?”

“W-which kiss?” Her voice is breathy.

I smile against her shoulder. “The one after the moms called. Do you?”

She shakes her head.

“To be continued,” I remind her. “It was a promise. And I always keep my promises.”

Chapter Ten

MIA

There are days I actually hate my life.

Like today. Evie handed me my coffee along with a message from Michaela King’s people. Since Michaela is a musician, we don’t run in the same circles. I didn’t know whether to be surprised she wanted to talk about Tucker. I’m still not sure why since I’m too chicken-shit to call her, keeping myself fake-busy until I escape for a shower after my workout.

Garrett’s laughter echoes up the stairs, and my heart beats a little harder in my chest.

He’s home early.

It’s been so easy to fall into this routine with him. He’s home early every night, and our movie nights from before have continued, but this time we snuggle together on the couch and spend most of the movie making out like teenagers.

I still can’t believe he was a virgin. The romance book club seemed like such a crazy story that I texted Bailey and asked her about it under the guise of maybe reading along. It’s a real thing. Although Garrett hasn’t been in about six months.

With my hair damp and wearing my comfiest pair of yoga pants and an oversized sweater, I hurry down the stairs, ready to snuggle up to him and get his advice on the whole Michaela call.

I need to call her back. There’s the possibility that something new will be hitting the media that throws me back into the spotlight. It seems to have faded since our quickie wedding in Vegas, and I’ve been enjoying the lack of attention, but I worry that what Michaela has to say might change that.

The sight of Garrett and Evie so close together stops me in my tracks just outside the door to the family room. It’s not just that they’re standing close together, his eyes crinkling as he laughs and her hand on his arm. It’s the way they’re standing next to the couch where he and I snuggle on our movie nights.

Bitch, get your hand off my man.

Wait, no. Evie is my assistant, my friend—probably my closest friend outside of Garrett. I want the two of them together. That’s been my plan from the beginning. Garrett’s reward for going along with my crazy scheme to stay married.

If that’s true, then why do I have to hold myself back from stalking over there and ripping her hand away from his arm?

What the hell is wrong with me?

“Hey, there you are.” Garrett’s attention shifts to me, his smile brightening.

“Here I am,” I reply.

Could I sound any more awkward?

Evie eyes me while slinging her bag onto her shoulder.

“You okay there, Mi?” she finally asks.

“I’m fine.” My voice is tight, the words sticking in my throat.

Yep, fine. That’s me. Fine, fine, fine.
