“For years, it meant nothing to me that he killed a woman, who was basically his—” Da stops when I stand to my full height.

“Say what you want about her father, but donotuse that word about my wife’s mother.”

Da nods and sits. “Her grandfather’s money has been in a blind trust for years. It’s only a few million. But it belongs to her. There’s a yearly pension too, commensurate with her grandfather’s title. Which will pass to that wee one if it’s a boy. Have your brother Eoghan look it all over and make the necessary calls for her to collect her money. Unless you think she won’t want you if she’s a rich, royal French princess.”

I crack up. “She doesn’t care about money like that.” But my wife will appreciate she has independent wealth. I’m strong enough to share this with her, because I believe she loves me.

“Do you know where her mother’s body is?” I want to give the woman a proper burial.

“No.”

It hits me. “That’s why you told Katya to call Ma, Ma.”

“Aye.”

“She’s the only mother Katya has now, so I want to make the most of it while she can.”

Da chokes up. “I don’t know how I’ll live without her.”

I know exactly how he feels. I dodged so many bullets to keep Katya all mine.

Da and I finish our cigars, leaving the past behind us.

When I see Ma again, she already looks like she has more color in her cheeks from Katya massaging her muscles.

“I’ll come back tomorrow if you want,” my wife says eagerly.

“I’d love that.” Ma sounds happy, and that warms my heart.

Fuck… Katya could have ended up in London.

We go back to my house, and it feels wrong to live so hidden like this, especially if I have a wife who will want to come and go as she pleases. “Do you want to shop for a new house?”

She turns to me. “Lachlan, I don’t want to make you move.”

I pull into the garage and turn to her. “I want you to have a house you choose to live in. That you picked out. This is just another place you were forced to live in. No more. I love you and want to give you everythingyouwant.”

Her eyes turn watery, and she sniffles, saying, “I love you, too. So much.”

“Then it’s settled.” I get out of the car, and at her door, I sink to one knee. “Katya, will youstaymarried to me forever?”

She laughs and straddles my bent leg. “Lachlan, I’dloveto stay your wife.Forever.” She kisses me on my scar. “And ever.”

I consider when I should tell her that her mother is dead, even though I think she suspects it. I know she has no idea she’s a millionaire French princess.

We have so much time now. I’ll tell her gently and I’ll be there for her. I’ll be everything she needs. She means everything to me.

“Come with me, my angel.” I lift her and bring her into the house I can’t wait to sell. “Let’s start our forever right now.”

“Oh, no! It’smyturn to kill the monster.” Nicole rips the plastic sword from the props box and pushes Addie out of the way.

“Ahhhh! The munchkins I love to eat.Glom, glom, glom.” Lachlan pretends to eat the little girls who are brave enough to climb all over him. “Mmmm, tasty. Yum!”
