“Quiet!” He pushes me against the side of the garage.

Panic fills me. All I can think to do is fight back, so I kick him in the shins.

“Fuck,” he growls and slaps me in the face.

It stings, but I eye him defiantly. “Is that all you got, asshole?”

“No.” He lifts a closed fist.

There’s sharp crack of pain and everything goes dark.

My brain snaps awake, and I scream, but I’m held down by a woman on my bed.

I notice the bronze dress and kick wildly. “Get off me!”

“Calm down, Katya,” the woman says. “I sent your guard away.”

My face throbs, and I taste blood in my mouth. I push her away and run into my bathroom to look in the mirror. My entire face is swollen, my right cheek already purple. I slowly open my mouth, expecting to see missing front teeth. My teeth are fine, but there’s so much blood, I vomit into the sink from the stress.

Who the hell is that horrible man?

“Let me help you.” The woman stands in the doorway. “We’re in this together.”

“Who are you?” I turn murderous eyes on her.

“My name is Nadia. I am Rahil’s personal assistant.” She touches her neck. “I am also his mistress, like he said.”

“You can have him.” I push away from her. “Youmarry him.”

“I cannot. I am already married. My husband is in a work colony. It is a prison, and he will not divorce me.” She sits me down and hands me a washcloth soaked in cold water. “I will sneak to kitchen and get ice in a moment.”

“Whose baby are you carrying?”

“Rahil’s. But he must marry you. He is powerful man in Russia. He is what you Americans call a Tech Billionaire. He sent a team of his best people to help your father find your sister.”

“And I’m the payment?”

“Your father’s money is financing his campaign. But he also needs wife.” She holds her stomach. “I am liability. A nosy reporter found out about us. Rahil needs a young, beautiful American wife with Russian blood to detract from our relationship. I can help you when we get home.”

I pull away from her. “I don’t want your help. Get out of my bedroom.Papa!”I yell, certain when he finds out what Rahil really is, he will call this off.

There are other ways to find my sister.

“Your father ended the party and left with Rahil. We need to get the swelling down by tomorrow.” She sounds panicked, like she didn’t expect him to be violent. “We need your makeup to cover the bruises. We have a flight tomorrow night to Moscow at ten p.m.”

Over my dead body. And if that’s the way out, so be it.

CHAPTER SIX

Lachlan

“Whenyousaidyouneeded to blow off steam, I thought we were driving upstate to ambush that theft ring.” Griffin Quinlan gapes at me while we idle in front of a high-end strip club.

A place I haven’t been to in…damn…more than two years. Griffin is aware of my extended bout of celibacy. Just not why.

“I need this more right now,” I grumble, checking my wallet for twenties.Fuck, only hundreds.

“Okay.” Griffin looks for a place to park. “I won’t lie. I prefer coming here without you. You either scare the fuck out of women, or they’re drawn to you like bees to honey.”
