“Others?”

“Young boys you’re grooming and raping.”

“I told that bitch—” He shuts up when I point the black plastic barrel at his head and twitch my thumb on the hammer.

“That’s my sister,” I drawl.

Priscilla is an O’Rourke. She’s one of us. Just like my wife.

“Fuck. I’m sorry.” He struggles against the chains binding his arms behind his back. “Man, I’m just trying to feed my family.”

“Family?” I glance back at the room. “You got a wife?”

“And two kids. I’m doing what I have to do.”

I fold my arms, the gun nudged against my stitched-up bicep, everything twitching and burning. “Tell it to someone who cares.”

“Man, please. I’ll… I’ll work for you. I have a whole network I can flip on.”

“So, you’re a philanderer. You’re a rapist. And now a rat? You think that works with me?”

“I’m not raping that kid. Helovesit.” Zed snaps, revealing his true feelings, remorse out the window.

I look over at Priscilla with the kid again. “He’s what? Sixteen?”

“Whatever.”

Fuck, that means he’s younger.

“Guy, listen. It’s who I am. It’s a sickness, all right? I can’t help it.”

His words spiral me down a vortex, flashed back in time to Father Eamon’s confession…

Staring down my Da’s gun, Father Eamon had also cried out:

“I can’t help it, Lachlan. It’s who I am. God forgives me. I beg every day for that atonement.”

I became the man I am today when I filled him with lead from my father’s gun.

Now I’m faced with the same evil.

I unload into this guy. Release the clip and reload. Stepping around his dead body, I empty the next clip into his groin. I stop when my armor-piercing bullets practically slice the guy in half, his guts spilling out like worms.

The room goes silent when I stop and hear breathing behind me.

Griffin nods. “Good one.”

“Aye.” I put the gun in my coat and catch Priscilla staring at me from the glass room. The ‘kid’ is hunched over in his metal chair.

When I get in there, she says, “Lachlan, they forced him into helping Zed.”

My phone buzzes, and I itch to check it because Katya is at school. I can’t stop thinking about her. I’m not the same man I was three weeks ago. My breathing doesn’t feel right when she’s not with me. “Follow me, Pris.”

“Stay here,” Priscilla says to the kid.

“Yes, ma’am.” He’s not tied up but sounds scared as fuck.

“Find out what else he knows about Zed’s operation,” I say to her, low and controlled. “See if he’ll give us names. Tell him we’ll protect him.”
