“These rumors shouldn’t be ignored.” She hesitated. “A great power is rising.”

I rolled my eyes. “Another day, another demon summoning.”

Matilda shook her head slowly. “Nothing of that nature. This is bigger than one demon.”

Her somber expression gave me pause. “What kind of power?”

“I don’t know the details, only that we would be wise to stay hidden.”

“Well, that’s no hardship for me. It’s the whole point of moving here.”

“Take care and don’t flaunt your powers.” She laughed lightly. “I forget who I’m talking to. There’s no fear of that.”

“Speaking of demon summoning, know anyone by the name of Kane Sullivan?”

“Should I?”

I shrugged. “Just curious.”

“What did he smell like?”

“Evergreen.” I smiled. “But that’s probably because we were in the middle of the woods.”

“Meeting strangers in the woods, eh? How very fairy tale of you.”

“Technically, the cocktail lounge was in the middle of the woods.” And he was no Prince Charming.

“A cocktail lounge? You should have said so.”

“We’re not going. It’s full of unsavory characters. He keeps a healer on his payroll for the fights.”

She gave me a pointed look. “You’re not making me want to go any less with that description.”

I slipped on my shoes that I’d left by the front door. “While we’re riding, tell me if you sense a vortex or some other power source,” I told her.

“Wouldn’t you be able to tell?”

“Not always. It depends on what it is. There seems to be something here that attracts supernaturals, but I haven’t found any evidence of it.”

“Hmm,” Matilda said.

“What?”

“I wonder whether that’s what enabled me to find you so easily. I asked, and the universe answered.” She opened her arms.

“Is it usually harder than that?”

“Well, this is the first time I’ve hunted you. For others, it isn’t so instantaneous though. Usually involves an offering.”

Food for thought.

I walked outside to see her spectral horse, a black mare with fearsome red eyes.

“Gorgeous. What happened to the last one?”

“This one suits my personality better.”

“She rides relentlessly?”
