I swung my purse over my shoulder. “A promise is a promise.”

CHAPTER13

Idrove home from Walden Street deep in thought. Otto was right; the caller could be any number of supernaturals. It was possible Steven and I were in over our heads. Then again, I couldn’t think of anyone better equipped to accompany Steven. Chief Garcia would be useless against most supernaturals.

I spotted Nana Pratt on the bridge as I passed through the gate.

“Lorelei, thank goodness you’re back.” She wrung her hands, inasmuch as a ghost could.

“What’s wrong?”

“Come and see.” She guided me to the cemetery where I stared at the upturned ground.

“What happened?” It looked like someone tried to dig up the plots. “Grave robbers?”

“Worse.” Nana Pratt was so distraught, she could barely string words together.

Ray materialized beside her. “Whoever it was, they tried to get rid of us.”

I blanched. “They tried to exorcise you?”

Nana Pratt seemed to recover her voice. “Why would I need that? I’m a ghost and a very trim one at that.” She patted her hips.

“Not exercise.Exorcise. Cast you out of the cemetery.”

Gasping, Nana reeled back. “They tried to kill us?”

“You’re already dead,” I reminded her.

“Then why are we still here?” Ray asked.

“Because they don’t know what they’re doing. Did you recognize anyone?”

“No,” she said. “They wore black hoods like the intruder.”

“How many of them?”

“Three this time,” Ray said.

“Could you tell if they were men or women?” I asked.

They shook their heads in unison.

“They held hands and chanted,” Nana Pratt recounted, “but their voices were too low to tell.”

Chanting in a cemetery could be anybody. Even vampires could perform a ritual with the right tools. It was their goal I was interested in—why cast out the spirits? What did they hope to gain from that?

“Why didn’t you get a closer look?” I asked.

“Because I didn’t want them to catch me.” Nana said this like it was the most obvious reason in the world.

I pondered the mess. “It’s a cemetery, and the only one who’d be inconvenienced by the ghosts here is me.”

“Maybe someone was trying to do you a favor,” Ray offered.

“Doubtful.”

“You didn’t sense anybody breaching the ward?” Ray asked.
