Josie sashayed to a small room. I caught a quick glimpse of the assembled members as we passed the entrance to the main lounge area. The vampire pointed to a red velvet chair. “Sit. Do not move until…”

“Until I say so,” a voice finished for her. Kane Sullivan slipped into the room, looking dapper in a three-piece suit and shiny black loafers. He looked more ready for a corporate board meeting than a meeting of supernatural killers. Waves of blond hair covered his head like a golden crown. He resembled an angel rather than a prince of hell.

“Mr. Sullivan, how nice to see you again.”

At six-four, he towered over me. “Miss Clay. To what do we owe the pleasure of your visit?”

“I’d like to speak to your assassins. I thought it would be more efficient to address them all at once.”

“They’re notmyassassins, Miss Clay.”

“What’s your connection to them?” I asked. “I forget.”

He wagged a finger. “Ah-ah-ah. I see what you’re trying to do.”

“Establish your role within the guild? Is that so strange?”

He took a step closer to me and I caught a whiff of his scent. Musk, sandalwood, and a hint of pine. Once again, the musk and sandalwood combo reminded me of werewolves. The demon lived and worked in the woods where werewolves roamed. That had to be the connection.

“Whatever you’d like to say to the guild, you can say to me first. This room is soundproof.”

“Do I even want to know why?” I asked.

He grinned. “I’d be happy to show you.”

Groaning, Josie rolled her eyes. “Stop flirting. The meeting is about to start.” I had a feeling Josie was forever bulldozing Kane’s construction zone of fun.

I pointed at Kane. “That was flirting? I had more chemistry with the cashier at the hardware store.”

“That’s because everybody has chemistry with Clark Hewitt,” Josie said matter-of-factly.

Kane appeared amused by her confession. “Josie, would you be a dear and bring Miss Clay an NDA to sign before she goes into the meeting?”

Josie’s eyes widened in shock. “You aren’t seriously going to let her attend the meeting,” she protested. “I thought we’d lock her in here until it was over.”

Kane maintained eye contact with me. “Why not allow it? I let you attend, and you’re not a member.”

“I’m your Director of Security. Of course you let me attend.” She looked ready to throttle her boss.

“Miss Clay is already aware of the existence of the guild, as well as this meeting. What harm can it do?”

Josie choked on her response. “Please tell me you’re joking. For starters, their identities are secret.”

Kane shook his head. “Au contraire. They’re not officially secret.”

“I’ve already met three of them,” I added. “Why not the others?”

Josie threw up her hands. “Why not just give her a list of their addresses and phone numbers too?”

“Oh, I don’t need their phone numbers,” I said. “I hate talking on the phone.”

Kane suppressed a smile. “The NDA should lay your fears to rest, Josephine.”

“Not by a long shot,” Josie mumbled, but she did as she was told and left the room.

Still grinning, Kane slid his hands into his pockets. “How have you been?”

“Busy. You?”
